Out of the main areas, especially during low season. Some want to be 'out of' though. I prefer Albufeira, which is 'in is'. ;-)

| I agree, I was looking at another set of apartments right on the beach which came in at under £170 each. But it got me thinking of how cheap you could get a nice week away in a foreign country. Turns out much cheaper than a week in a Caravan down Trecco Bay in Porthcawl. (y)

Well it's your choice I guess, if nudist holidays are your thing I'm not sure this resort would welcome you. Alternatively you can take luggage with Ryanair or if 10kg isn't enough then pay for extra luggage. Standard hand luggage allowance: 1 bag which must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 20cm in size and 10kg in weight. This bag must also fit in our sizer and should easily fit in the overhead locker. 1 small bag e.g. handbag, laptop bag etc. must not exceed 35cm x 20cm x 20cm and should easily fit under the seat in front of you.

If you're going away as a couple, you can't beat the albufeira. If you're eating out, the food is exceptional. I highly recommend the Teppenyaki called Fuji it's just past the new town, there's lots of nice restaurants though. Old town is nice for a chilled meal and a few drinks, New town is rowdy but if you fancy a mad night get yourself there! Great deal

what a rip off!!!

Common.Sense

Correct, it is a generalisation that taking children out has a significant effect on their results. I have seen no scientific evidence. So when a child is sick should the parents should be fined as the child is missing education and will fall behind? Being off sick and going on holiday has the same end result, missed school. Before my children took their 11+ exams, they both took a week off school. Not to go on holiday, but to prepare (they were "sick"). A child in primary school can learn more at home in a week compared to one month at school. A 10 year old child sitting at 11+ aiming for a high score can work out 17% of 50 in less than 5 seconds in their head and these highly qualified primary school teachers often struggle, such is their ability in basic maths. This is a generalisation from experience.

teerex

This is a generalisation.

Common.Sense

Take them out early. The school cannot fine you as the parent won in the High Court. I took mine out. My son scored 99% in Maths Sats and got 13.5 GCSEs all A/A*. Taking them out does not make any difference. When teachers go on strike they suffer. Then the school takes children on a residential trip in term time and that's fine. It is all nonsense. What do they learn in primary school? If the school fined you refuse to pay any voluntary contributions for trips. The Head of my son's grammar school stated he would never fine parents, although he did not approve of term time holidays. But what do they do just before Christmas?

M_z

Just supply and demand. Can't wait until mine are done with school though. :)

gordondavenport

I agree with you. The travel deals on here are always out of a stinky airport like Luton in the middle of the week, badly timed flights and renting a car from some company I've never heard of. They are cheap though... I guess there's a reason all the good companies, airports and flights cost more.

I'd recommend a quick look at recent trip advisor reviews, this place is really cheap for all inclusive summer holidays this year.... The trip advisor reviews explain why! Hopefully it's improved and will then be a bargain but I decided to swerve it...

Dvorack

Weather shouldn't be too bad. By March it should be around 20ºCs which is like Scotland's summer ;)

^ I know, but the flooding will now happen every time there is heavy rain because certain 'connected' folk decided to conveniently ignore expert advice during the revamp. - There is always Carvoeiro? - Or go further south, to say, those islands to the west of Africa?

Thar

That was two months ago to be fair, we were there the week before. It has flooded again since I believe, but not quite as badly. Wouldn't put me off, I love the Algarve, especially Albufeira.

Mark3209

It really depends on what kind of holiday you're after - if you want a quieter time but still have access to the main hub bub and stuff going on, including the beach, I'd suggest staying somewhere like Salgados which is just along the coast from Albufeira itself....its really sad for me to say, but the whole Montechoro area has become very 'club 18-30' now, complete with the odd kebab shop here and there and VERY geared toward the British tourist trade (who can blame them though, you've gotta make money when/how you can haven't you?!), whereas Albufeira itself is still clinging onto its quant charm and retains some of its authenticity... Like I said before, the country desperately needs the tourism trade as its a very poor (economically) country, so please please go! It's a stunningly beautiful country it really is, and entirely different to Spain......but it wouldn't be fair to send people there not knowing about the current issues following the floods...

Gamer_U

Good point. A lot and by that I mean A LOT of people lost their goods and if it were to do with running their business then it was utterly ruined for the most part. This reminds me of another place but hopefully it never gets flooded again, if it does then its residents needs to be ready for it. Mother nature can be a bitch.

rachelandgromit

Would you recommend the other hotel in Porches? I've never been to Portugal but it may be really helpful if you could perhaps suggest other areas that may be more family friendly. Yes for some people the flights may be tricky but the savings with a family of 4 could be substantial.

Mark3209

Hmmm, tricky one this for a few reasons - the multi flights with kids can't be much fun, once there, there's not really that much going on in Lagos so a hire car in top is essential (I lived in the Algarve for 13 years), however, be conscious that large parts of the Algarve have recently been wrecked by severe flooding including downtown Albufeira, and given their economy and infrastructure, it's gonna take a long long time (years I'd suspect) to put back to 'presentable'.... I'd never stop anyone going there as frankly, the whole of Portugal relies massively on tourism, but it's certainly a consideration that needs to be made...

rachelandgromit

Just 1hr 25 here you go: I do the 'fly into one airport and back to another' alot such 'open jaw' options are always cheaper. I was half expecting to see the normal comments about it being a 'faff' so nice to see I'm not the only one who actually likes them!
