thanks tuscan, ill take a look and probably will PM you!

I'd avoid paying for a course with the basics of HTML and CSS there are loads of those on YouTube for free.

I'd suggest checking out thenetninja, thenewboston, traversymedia, codecourse (formerly PHPAcademy) or LearnCode.Academy.

I've used them all, and have been extremely happy with the content and presentation.

Once you've got a basic idea, and know what sort of thing you'd like to learn... Then look at more advanced topics, and consider paying on Udemy etc if you find something you like.

https://www.udemy.com/the-web-developer-bootcamp/https://www.udemy.com/build-website-scratch/I'd have said either of these to begin with. You'll want to start learning HTML and CSS as these are the basis for all websites, then move onto Javascript. If you want further advice just PM me and I'll be glad to help! It's a steep learning curve but after enough experience it starts to become clear

I had a lot of questions about where to even start but your post serves as an excellent reference point. Many thanks!

No problem mate.

Yeah automation can be a bit of a journey.

When you do start make sure you look at things like docker and Selenium GRID, very quickly you'll hit a wall in terms of execution time with just one runner so you'll want multiple to spin up and run the pack to reduce time. Few places have also been using AWS Lambda to do the same aswell (Look up Lamdium).

If you ever need a hand with your approach drop me a PM.

Hi,I've been working in Test for 12 years, work as a Test Manager.ISTQB …Hi,I've been working in Test for 12 years, work as a Test Manager.ISTQB isn't needed, it's one of those things some big corporates will mention in job specs but it's getting less popular.. When I look at CVs or interview testers, it plays zero part in my decision. Having got the certification years ago myself, it teaches you very little.Primary skills you want to pickup with current industry trends...- Automation, Cucumber / BDD frameworks. Start with Java as languages like a Ruby, Python or Groovy can be learned more easily after.- Jenkins or other orestration tool. You want to get familiar with creating and running your own jobs for your automation. - SoapUI. Get familiar with testing APIs, also building your own mock services.- jMeter. Get some basics of performance testing. Learn the difference between Load, Soak, Stress etc. It's a relatively easy tool to learn.- SQL. Learn the basics, joining tables and databases. Aliases within your queries etc.- Exploratory Testing. Read up on session based testing.- Agile. Read up on Scrum and Kanban, as these are the dominate methods used for delivery in an agile environment. Get to know the ceremonies and familiar with JIRA as it's probably the biggest tool used now. Some "Nice to haves"...- AWS.. Learn the basics, uDemy course can help you but you mainly want to understand what it is, get your first EC2 instance running etc. - Hadoop... Quite a bit of demand for "Big Data" testers. Research it and have a play.- BASH scripting. Handy to have with many companies turning to Linux to reduce costs.Get yourself to spend meetups, plenty of testing ones to meet people in the industry.Testing can be a mammoth subject, the above just gives you some broad skills for most jobs.To give yourself a better chance in future interviews, create an automated test pack which demonstrates some simple BDD driven tests run via Jenkins and build using a Page Object Model. Bring it along on a laptop and actually offer to run through it, gives the person interviewing you allot of confidence you can hit the ground running with it as you'll have no hands on work experience.

That's a fantastic post spritey.

I work in quite a small QA team and we are all doing manual testing currently (as few of our products are convenient for automated testing and we have a shortage of skills in that area), but I have a view on automation for the future as our platform is due to change to a SaaS/API driven model in the coming years.

I had a lot of questions about where to even start but your post serves as an excellent reference point.

Many thanks!

Glad I didn't pay any more for this - started the "Diploma in Social Media Marketing", because when I did it for £2 last year, it was clearly the first time they'd done it and it was awful, so I thought I'd give them another chance, especially when I saw there were other courses included.
Quickly realised that it's the same recording just played out again every time the course starts. Let me summarise the course content:
Bubbly south African woman saying something like this:

Day one:

5 minutes in: "... so I'm super stoked about having you guys on this course. Are you super stoked too? Just type into the chatbox.... ok, great let's move on."

15 minutes in: "... so, who knows what the internet is? just type it into your chatbox. super exciting, hey guys?"

25 minutes in, will to live fading rapidly: "...ok guys, super exciting, so the first thing to do is that you need to figure out who your target customer is. does anyone know what a target customer is? just type it into your chatbox there guys".

30 minutes in: gave up.

Day three, give it another chance

1 minute in: "... super exciting to have all you guys back. just say hi in the chatbox and let me know you're here. Great. OK. Awesome."

I really hope some of the other courses are aimed at grown-ups, because I had to give up...
Still no resolution on this issue. Thanks for your help.

Anyone recommend any free mentoring sites. I am struggling to find motivation to get back into education even though I love to learn. I just need help to focus my attention on learning something for some time every day...
There is also edX.org which offer free University level course.

My point was Apple run these courses so you get used to and use Apple …My point was Apple run these courses so you get used to and use Apple software. IMovie, Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are only available on Apple devices. Thats a lot of money you have invested for the device and spoftware.Apple hope that you'll get used to these products and use them, and when you are in the market for a new PC you'll stick with Apple. Its no different to Microsoft who give away software to students under the Dreamspark / Imagine projects, so when the students enter the works of wok they will be using Microsoft software forevermore.

I can see your point Gavin but this isn't some third party clone software, honestly you couldn't be more wrong, I work in the media industry & we use a variety of Mac's and PC's all doing professional jobs. Final Cut and Logic Pro are amazing professional software, even if you had the choice of PC & Mac and apps many will still choose the software, wether it's on a Mac or a PC. Yes they are Apple Apps but they are no different to any other pro app, apart from being considerably cheaper! Pro's use these apps because they like the app not because the don't want to sell their PC or Mac especially Logic Pro X. It's a good deal because students can get free courses on apps, that Pro's use.
booked for my grannie
I did a couple of these a year or two ago, it was great fun, and informative. I didn't learn as much as hoped, but others attending seemed to be very new to computers in general, not just the ipad (which the course was about) so they learned more. I loved it for that, telling them something, and even for telling me something new for 5 mins is 5 mins more than I knew before, so worth an hour of free-ness.

I certainly liked it!

No app required, you can check it on a pc/laptop, I used apple.com/uk/…ay/ and it mentions locations. Think you can specify your local place somewhere, I entered my postcode and it mentions a heap that are close and not close. Scroll to the bottom to see the courses - showed specific things at top of page with big pics (not relevent to me, but looked interesting)
