The native resolution of 35mm film is above 4k, so it is perfectly …The native resolution of 35mm film is above 4k, so it is perfectly possible for old films to look better than new films shot using 4k cameras.

LOTR was filmed on 35mm but then scanned-in for digital post processing at 2K. The Hobbit was "filmed" digitally at 5K but then downsized to 2K for post processing. It would require a lot of rework on grading and digital SFX to produce a native 4K of either. They would most likely just run it through an upscaler instead.

I believe you're right, and PJ is not willing to work on a 4k release.

Copying a large amount to/from the drive will be noticeably slower at that …Copying a large amount to/from the drive will be noticeably slower at that speed. But yeah I guess it depends on preference for noise/speed.

For me slower hard drives always win out for my type of usage. Once files are on these sort of drives I'm rarely transferring to and from, and I find that slower drives seem to last longer than their faster counterparts. Reliability wins over everything else for me and my WD Green and Toshiba 5400rpm drives have lasted me years. Every 7200rpm I've had has eventually given up the ghost after shorter periods of time.

Without fail you always get plonkers that don't get why people use these sort of drives commenting on the sort of deals. It's guaranteed that if a 5400rpm drive gets hot someone will come along and say 'Slowwwww'

Normally I would agree with this logic, but in this case the reviews and …Normally I would agree with this logic, but in this case the reviews and the YouTube videos appear to suggest these are OK, and whilst I would be worried if they were £100 or so, I think for £30-50 they are worth a punt. One of my neighbours has just paid to have some CCTV installed and it cost well over £500 for two cameras and being honest it doesn't look a million miles away from one of these kits!!

It depends on how much hassle you wish to endure vs your DIY and technical ability vs your budget etc. Many Hikvision installers for instance guarantee their kit for 3 years, these are rock solid for reliability and quality and will probably last at least 5 years if not longer, but you'd probably spend around £600 for a 2 camera 2MP POE system or £800ish for 4 cameras, installed with 1TB DVR; a bit more for an NVR and/or 4MP cameras.

On the other hand a 4 camera analogue HD system like this will come in under £100 if you install it yourself. You will have to accept that these are built to a budget, with almost non existent support. You WILL have intermittent issues with the App not working specially when outside of the home WiFi network (reported in multiple reviews of this system), cameras breaking down and your needing to go up ladders etc BUT even if you need to install a whole new system every two years it will be half the cost of a pro installation long term.
Finally bought the system was just over £56, used the code to knock a couple of quid off
Then added extra cables 40 x1 30 x3 and Insurance. Just over £70

They look very similar to me once you take out the outlier. The 4TB line.

You'll find each line/capacity/family of drive within each manufacturer to have different failure rates. Eg, the 3TB/4TB drives from years ago that are still in those charts had horrible failure rates but the later 5TB/6TB onwards drives are drastically improved.

IronWolf seems like a solid lineup to me but only time will tell. Hopefully I don't regret picking up 2 of the 4TB drives.
Do they offer free delivery to Northern Ireland? Do they fu
Yeah, they are nice drives... I will wait to see the reliability of them, but with WD drives quality control seeming to have gone very downhill lately, I thought it was worth a try. I always keep multiple backups of very important files though, and at least 1 full backup of my main server, with a partial backup in another location.
I have 12TB on my main server now, with 9TB on my secondary, so most data can be backed up, plus it'll probably only be another few months 'til I buy some more anyway and finally get around to the raid 6 array I've been working things around to.
I'm actually probably going to be re-building my main NAS again soon, unless the SOC 16 core atom board from gigabyte is too damn expensive. It has 4 min-SAS ports supporting upto 16 SATA drives with a mini-sas 8087 cable to SATA, and so on. If they price it too high I can't see many takers for it, will wait and see. Anyway, if that goes ahead I can actually consolidate a few boxes into one as the SAS controllers I believe can pass through the storage to a freenas VM running on ESXi.. if not the storage has to be done from scratch again with regular SATA IIRC.. I couldn't see any way to do it anyway, so that idea is on hold for now, lol

Took approx 4-5 hours in total. Best bang for buck for 24/7 drives at the moment I think. If you only want desktop drives though, pretty much any will do.

I'm sorely tempted to grab a couple myself to replace the current 4TB drives I have which I could flip on eBay to minimize the overall cost.

Out of interest, what do you use your Lenovo Think Server for?, or ... …Out of interest, what do you use your Lenovo Think Server for?, or ... thanx. :-)

Google "The Ultimate Server"

I use it for THAT and because someone kept finding that Steam streaming box thing, I put Steam on it with older games (although with my GFX it handles games up to 2015ish quite well).

I also use Blue Iris on it to monitor my cheaper cameras (got NVR for better cameras).

Lastly I use Photoshop on it and After Effects which runs ok although takes an age to render so can't recommend it for that.

My recommendation is, buy a small SSD for the OS and increase the RAM. I got a 128GB SSD and 16GB RAM with Windows Server 2016 installed on it. Boot time is around 30s so a restart for updates is never too annoying.

I've also managed to put 4 hard drives on the RAID with 2 2TB mirrored for stuff I never want to lose and 2 4TB combined so 8TB there for multimedia files.

I did have to buy another SATA card to be able to use the CD ROM again though as motherboard only has 5 SATA slots and I used them all with the 4 HDs and 1 SSD.

Don't try to save yourself £20 buying an inferior server when these are so silent. You can't even tell it's on most of the time.Got 4 3.5 drives in there and 1 2.5 SSD for the OS.Not sure about the TS150, but on the TS140 you have to use shorter graphics cards otherwise you lose the front USB ports as they're in the way on the motherboard.

Out of interest, what do you use your Lenovo Think Server for?, or ... thanx. :-)

Got it. Works really well.
That fingerprint bypass thing posted above is from 2008.
Doubt it applies to this stick from 2017.
Looks like the protected content is only viewable in Windows because it launches the fingerprint program to unlock when inserted.

Dell outlet? I'm looking on there but haven't found anything yet

You have to be patient although it took me a day to secure mine go to the 15% off thread on HUKD. You'll get the extra 15 off

Then there's time on there that they update stock, the site is very buggy - for mine in particular it kept taking it out of the cart... saying it's gone but when I came back 30 mins later to the same laptop it was there and somehow it let me checkout. Weird bugged website but you'll easily save 300-500 quid and people that have got it from there say that the laptops are normally so immaculate although it says "scratch and dent" they find none.

Hope that helps.

Is it better to get one of these or an external drive. Just looking to …Is it better to get one of these or an external drive. Just looking to store my films. Nothing important

If you don't care about portability and you have a spare drive bay in a PC case with reasonable airflow, IMO an internal drive would be a much better bet.

External drives in caddies generally have a tougher life than their internal counterparts and as a consequence tend to die sooner. Caddies very often have inadequate cooling, causing the drives to run at the upper end of their rated safe temperature range and sometimes beyond, and by their very nature external drives are way more prone to damage from accidental bangs and knocks, particularly when they're powered up (3.5" desktop drives don't have as much tolerance for rough handling as 2.5" laptop drives which are designed to be used on the move).

Perhaps less importantly but still a consideration, an internal SATA connection will usually give you faster and more reliable transfer speeds than a USB3-connected caddy.

Hubby is a network engineeer & geek... he swears by Synology! we have a DS215+ (2 bay) and its great for media storage & playback to all out home devices and also sharing photo's to friends/family abroad. *heat!
Yes....rsync

I had my (ds214play - but same OS) rsync to a readynas no problem...it would connect to lots of things, but definitely another NAS.
Is it possible and or reasonably easy to setup to have two of these on the same network and use one to mirror the other?

That doesn't fix the issue - it just moves the problem. It is not possible to disable thumbnail generation and have working DLNA. That is the real problem.

Heat!

Won't buy it now because my needs have changed. But I was looking for one of these to carry with me a VMWare machine. USB2.0 is too slow to run a VM and 3.0 is nice, but you need a really fast drive. This one is even faster than my laptop's HDD!

Your WD passport isn't solid state...

ah of course - good point!!

still, the main point i was trying to make was that i dont really see why anyone would need that much data to be so portable and quick to access - for most people I guess a traditional HDD would be more than sufficient, but I'm sure there are a few who could use this.
