As regards taxis trying it on, the one taxi I got in Gdansk was as …As regards taxis trying it on, the one taxi I got in Gdansk was as expensive as a London black cab. Not very far, but about £20 on the meter. The remainder I did with Uber which is cheaper than London Uber. I had one Uber I had to cancel, I got hit with the cancellation charge, I pleaded my case to Uber Poland and got it refunded. When the person above describes themselves as a Eurasian couple, which is a term I am not familiar with, I have to say that I didn't see any black or non-white people in Gdansk in my four days there. Even in an Indian restaurant we were served by Polish girls. I am sure it would be no danger to anyone who isn't white, but it is worth noting.

Something passed on to me by my polish friends even. In some places of Poland people will still be a bit racist. Not that even in London people wouldn't tbh

Ok - I will try and answer your questions in order. Bear in mind I am no …Ok - I will try and answer your questions in order. Bear in mind I am no expert but have been a few times. The main attractions. Well the Christmas Markets would be a biggy if you took advantage of this deal obviously. Gdansk has a lot of history with WW2. It is where the first shots were fired in anger. If that doesn't float your boat then for more modern history is the Solidarity museum and the story behind the first signs of breaking the communist stranglehold on the Slav and Balkan countries. It was a major achievement at the time and for those of us of a certain age it was all over the news but didn't really mean much to me at the time. The city itself is picture postcard stunning in the old town. There are a great deal of decent bars and restaurants just off the beaten track. There is a good guide to what to see here - https://www.inyourpocket.com/data/download/gdansk - just put any email in so long as it is in the xx@xx.com it will accept it but I would recommend adding your proper one as there is a wealth of info on the download and on other cities from that site. Food is very good quality and drinks are cheapish. Cheaper than the UK but not as cheap as other cities in Poland. There is a growing secne of micro breweries and craft beer places which are brilliant and offer modern takes on classic Polish dishes. Is it safe? Yes but I would have a caveat with that answer. As in the UK or anywhere else just use a bit of common sense. You get the odd beggar round the sites but be polite and they don't hassle you. Obviously don't go flaunting your designer gear and iphone off the main city centre but that is just common sense. I have never seen any trouble and found the locals to be very polite and helpful. Is it safe for non Polish speakers. Yes totally. A lot of signs and menus are in English. Most people speak English as their second language and will be as helpful as they can be.Can we move around. Yes - the trains are very safe as are the trams and buses. Again you will get help buying tickets etc. Just remember to validate them! Taxis will try it on but just stick to a set fee in advance.Any other places. Warsaw is immense. Mixing the sprawling new town (which is a bit like London with high rise buildings and busy streets) with the old town which is rich in history and again very pretty to see. Other places of interest are Poznan and Wroclaw. They are more Germanic feeling in that everything is built round a town square. I would say Wroclaw and Gdansk are the nicer places to visit. Again download the guides from the site linked above and see for yourself.Hope this helps.Oh - and as regards the rude comments from some on here which have now been removed - have a trip out to Poland and see for yourself what it is like before commenting. I feel sorry for the Poles that have had to come here to earn money and leave such a beautiful country behind. I would take Gdansk over Crewe any day!!!

Thank you very much for spending a good amount of time giving an honest and detailed answer.

Ryanair - The world's first airline to actually sell imaginary seats, on imaginary flights.

Oh, and do play following link as you go through the booking process:

Ryanair's slogan should now be: "for when you have no other option...." like a lender of last resort only then time it's a 'flyer of last resort' ok it's more accurately described as providing a 'lottery flying service"..

Brilliant city to visit, so much to see and do.... we scratched the surface when we went last November, walking to the Schindler museum through the old Jewish Ghetto is very interesting (and sad). thanks guys- I have just booked a week accomodation and flights in february.

In relation to the post above:
'direct transfer with bus £20 return (drops and picks up outside hotel )
lift passes est £240 ( 2 adult and 2 kids )
ski hire £140 for all'

how do you arrange these? especially the direct transfer? as my flight lands at half 11 at night so want to make sure I have something arranged before I get there.
- can you get lift passes and ski hire when you get there or best to book in advance?

Thanks!!
added some heat as ive just booked myself for half term,
we go every year and love it , anyone wants further information feel free to PM or reply , love the polish culture in the Tatras.

few points worth adding to the thread.

Krakow is the airport not Warsaw.

loads of buses leave from the main station to Zakopane , you will need to get the bus from the airport to the main station ( the train line is being refurbed)

if you are new to skiing then Zakopane is excellent as it has so much to offer, however if you are a competent skier then it can be limited.

We go to Bialka Tatrazanska instead which has better skiing for our group , weeks pass is around £70!!!! and works on all the slopes.

also Hotels and Cottages , some quality places to stay for next to nothing , have a look on booking.com
we usually stay in a guesthouse , double room with own bathroom tv and wifi and breakfast £60 each for the week 10 minute walk to the slopes.

also worth just hiring the ski gear at the slopes , the guy Lech who owns the above has some quality gear and hes sound but its a pain having to cart the stuff back and forth , same price on the slopes and keep it in a locker if returning next day.

food and drink is brilliant , highlander food is amazing and i cant wait for this year , an example of prices is £1.20 for a pint (on slope) and around £8 for a quality 3 course meal

heres a few website links , this is a great site for all Zakopane info

discoverzakopane.com/ski…tml

this is a great ski resort for all the family

bialkatatrzanska.pl/osr…tml

we have booked this year at half term for a family of 4 from ireland

17th-24th feb flights £320 including luggage
direct transfer with bus £20 return (drops and picks up outside hotel )
lift passes est £240 ( 2 adult and 2 kids )
ski hire £140 for all
accomodation ( 2 bed studio ) £300

thats a total of £1000 for a family of 4 all in

food and drink is so cheap , we eat all meals on the slopes and the finest restaurants , we estimate that standard to be around £400 for the week.

so around £1400 for a weeks skiing and all the food and drink we could want

compare that to buying 2 mulled wines and 2 hot chocs in France , cost €30 , in Zakopane , costs £5
Edited by: "steviep23" 24th Jun 2014
Transfer from Krakow to Zakopane takes between one and a half to two hours depending on if you use the train or bus. Flight prices are likely to be similar of not better. Hope this helps
Liverpool flights in Feb are sound £60 return.
Is there any reason to fly into Warsaw. A better option is to fly to Krakow from Liverpool. Bus is then around 2 hrs. Love Krakow.
