Save £9.75 on Post Office passport check and send £72.50

So we all hate paying to renew a passport, but we also hate paying the post office for check and send even more... Well use the government online passport application form (free) and save the £9.75!

I had forgotten I needed to renew my passport this year, this reminded me. Online was a doddle, and I followed the guide on this site to make my own passport photos, saving over £15 in total. Received passport today, no problems, cheers op.

If you have renewed your driving licence in the past 5 years, you can click the option to use the online mugshot from that.
This works for renewing driving licence using passport photo, but it looks like you can't use driving licence photo to renew passport, just tried :(
I live in northern Ireland and I'm not going to get a Irish passport to save money. my passport will always be British and proud.
This is a very good shout and I always recommend using the online site to the people I countersign for.
The check and send is only as good as the person who does it in the Post office and as other people have said, some are somewhat lacking in training.
The gov.uk site is very simple and as previously explained, only allows you to fill in the correct bits, whereas a lot of people plough throught the whole form with no need !

Yes, those sorts of benefits.
What i was thinking was, income related purchasing power. Blackberry passport is £350 which equates to one weeks salary for someone on 20k.
Perhaps if blackberry could think of those who get £3,600p.a.and produce a phone for that market tied to 3 payg it might help a lot of people and both business' too.
There are perhaps 6million people living on low incomes in the uk and globally? Seems to me they are missing a market, only concentrating on low to middle income earners. We see chinese grey products can be cheap and good.(?)
why can't uk/canadian business do it is the question i ask?
Am i talking too much?

Fair enough but I had a q10 and the app selection for blackberry was poor, and most android apps *i* needed wouldn't work properly...

this was true on earlier versions of blackberrys android runtime but since 10.3.1 things have been a lot better. When I had the z30 on 10.2.x it was awful, crashing left right and centre, now most apps run flawlessly with little to no effort, just download the apk from the play store using this: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ and install it. With A bit of effort you can get your Google play account working on blackberry now but I've not tried this as all the apps I need are either on the Amazon store, available via the link I just posted or on the Blackberry app store. You should give them another go.

me either. Blackberry 10 is far superior. Optional access to Google services would be nice but not Android as an OS.

Got the ultra at 59.99 and voucher but what a lot of messing about! These are definitely not normal reservations, I was in Argos a good 30 minutes while they tried to figure out where my reservation was, where the actual drive was in the store, what the price was supposed to be. when this was mentioned last year (the boots photo machine discount), i used a camera, off-white wall as a background, epassportphoto.com to process, and with a bit of tinkering with the computer, got 8 photos on one printout. definitely worked out well, even checked my passport application at the post office and the photo was exactly within the guidelines. won't use a rip-off photo booth again.

kinda a pointless deal tho most are

ok £5 / £6 in a machine any more where you can be lazy and get it right with out having to do it your self, and get them signed once

£.64p or less, doing a lot of work your self more so if you get it wrong and pay postage again to resent your passpost apply forms in, not counting the wasted time getting them all signed and resigned as you must do any more even for renewals

a passport lasts for 10 years and costs £77.50 now itselfs, really not worth saving up £4.36 over 10 years LOL

might be already to get lots of cheap photos to put your name and number on and hand out to drunk chicks when clubbing tho

Looks like you are on the wrong website. This deal saves you around 90% on the 'lazy' route so is hot. There is lots of info available on how to get the photo right so no reason why you would have to do it more than once. What difference does it make that you only have to do it every 10 years, its still a 90% saving.

i do understand the idea of the site just they a limit to the effort side of things (even if it is mostly easy to learn to take pictures still be effort), and that saving is small over the years, witch years is what makes the diff, since most if not all of us in 10 years get more than 600 in interest alone just if your only on one bank for it, so making 100% sure the first time is worth more than the saving over time of a few pounds

tho im still glad it was posted, not saying that and even said for other uses these are great but just not for passosts witch i said at the time

This is my first post!

Dear me...What have i started?

Just to clarify I bought these as I needed passport size photos for my student son for ID cards, bus passes. I thought it was such a bargain I should share.

:)

Thanks for sharing :) we don't have as Asda by us but us but I have voted hot as I think it's a great price and ideal for all the photos you need as a student etc, I know from experience that my three children had to have endless passport port sized photos taken when they were at school and college for one thing or another so I am sure this will come in handy for someone and the fact others are mentioning other places may help others too.

I only put in my post about snappy snaps because your post reminded me of the weird experience we had with my daughters photo (and the irony of watching Twilight when passport office phoned) trust me no teenage girl wants to be told their image will not scan!

So welcome to HUKD and I hope you continue to share - we are a friendly bunch really :)

A question for current BB10 users- is there a decent sat nav option on the platform .

Yes agree, don't knock it till you tried it. BB10 is a major change to the old OS. Yes they do not have the following that Apple have but they also count real sales as opposed to units passed onto other companies inventories. Planning on getting a Passport soon, sadly the deal has now passed and its listed as £469. Had a demo the other week, love the whole BlackBerry blend system as well.

Anyway on to the Sat Nav question. NavFree is a great app, free to use and includes lots of maps to download and run offline. I have also used Mireo app, that costs but certainly won't break the bank. Have only just downloaded NavFree but so far seems good. At the moment I am still using the Mireo app as have lots of favourites on that one. Run these on my Z30
Sorry i didnt do a follow up to my comments but for anyone worrying about apps or lack of apps; please refer yourselves to http://redlightoflove.com/snap/

Now you have the same app catalogue as Android. Enjoy.
For offline SatNav Mireo Don't Panic is excellent, reasonably priced, is BlackBerry OS 10 native (i.e. not an Android port) and uses TomTom maps. I found Nav4Free's routing to be poor.
This phone seems to be selling very well since launch sold out at most places.
I already bought this phone. It's freaking awesome. Stop bloody voting stuff down when you've not even been near 6ft of one.
Bloody Apple / Android fanboys. Get a life, we need variety out there!

24/09/2014 confirmation of order and proof of purchase.
25/09/2014 item out of stock, they put me on backorder
27/09/2014 order canceled.

I checked my order on their website, end my order still on boxed shipment.

No I don't understand, If on my order status page, my order still there, they still didn't refund the money,
Do I will get the phone, or I will just loose time ?

digital river have been the worst company i have had to deal with when it comes to buying a phone. i had the same issue but after cancelling my order they created another one without telling me. now i don't know what is happening or what my actual order number is and they have charged my card, when the phone is on back order. their site states they do not touch the money until the phone is shipped. i just want my money back now :(

To be honest if you needed your passport urgently, I.e. For illness or business, you would have paid the extra fee in the first place. I know waiting more than 4 weeks is not usually the case but don't buy holidays before you get your passport.

How long is it taking then out of interest? from what I read it only seems to be more complex passports that are taking their time? x
The "How long is it taking, then?" figure seems to be the one they're not releasing. They have released numbers of applications involved:
BBC editorial staff
Last week, Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs up to 30,000 "straightforward" passport applications had not been processed within the three week target time.

The figures released by the Passport Office show that 23,000 "non-straightforward" applications may not have been dealt with in time either.

-- source

Ahh I see, thank you for that. I sent my daughter's off on Wednesday. I do not usually use check and sent because I begrudge paying the extra but I did this time so I will keep you posted on when I get it back.

I renewed mine over Easter and that took 3 weeks to come back - a little more than I have ever know but then there was a couple of days bank holiday there which probably caused a little backlog.

Thanks again for sharing the info xxx

I did see that deal on here, but far too much faffing about for my liking :p

Also, it would probably work out more expensive for me, if I factor in petrol costs to get to my nearest Asda or Boots, so the Picture Lizard option suits me better.

You dont officially need a passport within the EU if you dont travel beyond.
The passport is only free for people born on or before 02/09/1929. That date never changes so if you don't qualify now you never will. The government set this date as anyone born on this date would have been 16yrs old at the end of the 2nd world war. It was them trying to say thank you for going through the war.

It's not pointless... I travel a lot and my passport was starting to look pretty battered. What with it still having 6 years of validity left, I thought a £1 cover (the ones in the pound shops are fine) was a better investment than possibly having to pay out £70 for a new passport!

This is also what I am doing. SO it is actually to protect your passport to look battered, to some extend get mess up ....

not great, average price these days
I've been hoping for a 1TB external for £50, can't see any anywhere. If this is standard, where's the deal I'm looking for?
There's some sorta conspiracy with HD pricing. I bought a 1TB external (with power supply, but still) HD 2 years ago for £45, it costs £58 now.

I think the Japanese tsunami led to problems manufacturing hard drives and forced prices up - they seem to be on the way back down now though.

Proof? Seems like a ridiculous statement!

It has been well documented for ages that flooding in Asia impacted heavily on computing products and caused a rise in their prices.

I'm sure you will accept The Guardian as proof, dating back well over a year now.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/oct/25/thailand-floods-hard-drive-shortage

Ouch!!!!

I asked for proof that "Japanese tsunami led to problems manufacturing hard drives and forced prices up", of which none was given. Had they said it was due to mass flooding in Thailand I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been so skeptical.
Expired, shame not a bad deal with the 16GB stick
On one page it shows £60.99 for the drive + 16gb usb stick yet adding it to cart or going to the actual product page shows it as £70.99! Same with the drive alone (£59.99 goes up to £69.99)... so does that mean this is expired?
Coolcol2011
I'm confused? When I click on the link, the curry's price is £69.99, not £59.99?! However on the same page you can buy the HDD + 16Gb USB key package for £60.99?

Have Curry's just bumped up the price since this post went live?

The simple answer is "yes"

Definitely expired, £109.99 in store, wouldn't give it to me for £99.99
Though QuidoCo is 1.5% and Amex Platinum is around 1.25% which helps claw back a little (would have been there on the £99.99 deal...)
Yep £109.99 on the site
Rang PC World and she said the change of price on the site would be represented in the store, so looks like this has expired.
Going to try my luck at lunch time, but doubt it as seems to be a centralised pricing system
will this work on a mac

Nowadays I wouldn't put that down to anything more than luck. I've had Seagates outlast wd and vice versa, so given up caring. Just make sure the data is backed up and look for a drive that has either the best price or longest warranty!

Now there are only 3 manufacturers left keep an eye out for shinking warranties and increasing prices

This one is a better buy at £53.95http://www.ebuyer.com/320102-hitachi-1tb-touro-mx3-portable-hard-drive-0s03457

That depends on how reliable a drive you're after. I've had Hitachi, Seagate, Buffalo and WD, and it's only my old 320gb Passport SE thats been rock solid and reliable.

I have this drive. I lost my data on a couple of occasions. It should be able to draw enough operating power by usb, but the reality is that it needs a powered usb hub to work reliably. Now I keep a copy of anything I want to transfer onto this drive, shift it where it has to go, then delete the original copy. I wish I hadn't bought it.

Perhaps your host computer's USB port is faulty.

I have used eBuyer.com in the past, but my experience does seem to fall in line with the negative comments recorded by HotUKDeals.com members:

However, if you have better experience & the product is right for you, that's great.

You should list that product as a "Deal" so others can benefit from that price too.

£89.99 now.
Decent price for a 2.5 inch PORTABLE USB powered drive.

Cold voters are probably thinking it's a bigger desktop drive which are cheaper.
I ordered a blue one yesterday and got the case for free. Luckily I had free home delivery when I booked. Now it seems to be only 'Collect @ Store'. Anyways, it is a great deal. :)
Seem to get £5 cheaper by the day. Yesterday = £79, the day before = £85. Perhaps better wait another couple of days. :)
Odd thing - if you order the silver one you get a free case too - doesn't seem to apply to any other colours but makes it an even better deal!

Have a red one of these. Really good and does what it says. Good value.

A few pounds more by that you mean £12, went down to pc world on Saturday but no stock, noticed it was online last night so ordered.
Just checked and it, s gone up to £80 online.

These are tiny drives. the actual drive is modified to make the case smaller than the generic ones you buy to fit 2.5" drives into.
Not a lot bigger than 5 usb sticks side by side, fits into shirt or jeans pocket.

So just to get this right....

Do you get 7 passport size pictures onto one 6x4 picture?

Can you only have a single picture on all 7 pictures or can I have different pictures e.g. both kids (4 of 1 and 3 of the other) as only 2 identical photos are required for passport renewal.

How do I get 7 photos onto a 6x4 print and ensure they are the std. passport size?

All sorted now. Used the link in the above to create the 7x (6x4) prints and downloaded the jpg image to my PC. Put it in USB stick and took it to Tesco 1 hour service which was 25p each. Passports application now sent off. Thanks to OP

Cold for this, you can get it for free

care to elaborate.......?

EDIT:
Never mind I've seen the link (didn't notice it earlier).
Fair enough but all photo prints would be free under your argument.
Remember though that photos must be sharp and clear and printed on good quality photo paper. Good for people who already own these materials perhaps, but personally my printer is rubbish and photo paper is expensive, so it makes sense for me to have it professionally done for a few quid, as well as get 40 free photos too.

But you have to use your own camera and your own 'studio' - and therefore get a high chance of rejection for wrong colour background, red eye, eyes not level, etc etc

The amount of people we see (sent to us by the Post Office) whos photos have been rejected is amazing. All that wasted money!

All very true once again, but I did it without a 'studio' and my photos adhere to all of the conditions. I simply stood in front of a cream coloured curtain on a sunny day and made sure I did all the correct things (neutral face, nothing blocking eyes, etc).

Also, someone may use this service for something other than passports, e.g. driving licence, buss pass, oyster card, etc etc.

I think it depends entirely on the individual whether they take the steps to ensure that the photo is at an acceptable quality, it doesn't depend on the price or whether photobox/photobooths print the picture. I see what you're saying though, passports are expensive stuff. :p
eikito
. They don't even allow glasses anymore.

Pardon? Specs permitted if not tinted

# be taken with your eyes open and clearly visible (no sunglasses or tinted glasses and no hair across your eyes)
# be free from reflection or glare on your glasses, and the frames must not cover your eyes - the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) recommends that, if possible, you remove your glasses

Changed the deal pic so something relating to the actual posted deal, thanks

http://assets.photobox.com/assets/content_graphics/15/27115.jpg?1279194608

Rather an ironic picture as if you submitted this picture as your passport photo it would be rejected - the eyes have to be horizontal.

And if you think £5 is expensive, our shop charges £10.40 - although it is a guaranteed service (we take them again if they are rejected)
