I tried to convince my Daughter to go for a desktop instead of a laptop, but she wasn't having any of it.

Should have built a PC (popcorn) (lol)

Bitcoin has massively massively crashed this year. In fact the whole of the crypto market has heavily crashed. So many millionaires could have been wiped out this year if they held on.

Good deal :)

They deleted my last deal because it was posted over a month ago by someone else. Here's a better price for some of you who might be interested. They even accept bitcoin for all you millionaire miners. ;)

By "definitely ... later" I meant "not upfront" not "definitely later". And I meant it when I said "might". So I agree with you or vice versa.

I disagree. £90 is a fair amount of cash so should only really be done if you're serious. If you're not there, then you can easily end up wasting money overspeccing a PC for stuff you won't really see any benefit in. Some chips are just poor overclockers, and a fair amount of people may not even be interested in overclocking so I think it's worth keeping those people's expectations in check.

One should definitely add optional parts later once they've got some more cash after already spending their entire budget on just enough essential parts (assuming they want something now). The point being, eventually spending £90 on cooling might be a better option (performance for £) than buying upgrades and selling used.

I have one PC for my driving rig and another for my other stuff and my old i5 isnt doing to well these days

Not upgrading keeping the Cooler master with the I7 which is clocked at 5GHZ using the EVGA for my 9900K

DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 400 CPU Cooler (AM4 compatible) £16.79 @ Amazon Prime / £21.28 non-Prime
Found 5th DecFound 5th Dec
Cheapest it's been on Amazon. Similar/better performance than the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.

Thanks @ScootyPuffJr, saves me spending unnecessarily

Decent enough, from the reviews I've seen on YouTube the base of this is finished nicely smooth and even so gains would likely be negligible imo

One more question...I see it comes with a sachet of thermal paste, do you reckon it's decent enough or should I fork out for Arctic MX-4 instead?

Back to £21.59

Thanks Aretak, not looking to overclock initially but possibly further down the line. It's noticeably quieter then though? That's big plus of it is as trying to build an ultra silent rig.

4 Heat Pipes Continuous Direct Contact Technology Aluminium Fins 1 x 120mm PWM Fan 120 x 80 x 159 mm

That's alot less than what I paid for mine! I paid £200 for mine earlier this year, I would have been alot happier spending less though :p

Still on 2500K here :D

i paid about that for a skylake i7 engineering sample last year, shame you can overclock it using baseclock on an unlocked motherboard.

It was actually much cheaper then normal version, it was £78 from aliexpress last year

An engineering sample? Wow :o I just run my fan overtime to keep the temperatures nice. The extra speed at 4.7 can't be denied for some of the games and video editing I do. When did you get it, did it cost alot?

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 8 Core AM4 CPU/Processor with Wraith Spire 95W Cooler £151.97 @ Ebuyer
Found 5th DecFound 5th Dec
You get a CPU and a Cooler (party)

Yep, general consensus is that the Ryzen 2000 series has better IPC than the 1000 series and thus even parts with fewer cores can best higher end Ryzen 1000 series CPU in certain tasks such as gaming. I got the 2600 for around £120 while the eBay promo was on and am very happy as I couldn't have even got a 1700 for that price, best I could have got is a 1600, which is clearly bested by the 2600 as my main use will be gaming it should be well suited to my needs...

Nearly bought a 1700 from scan (same price once delivery was factored), but then changed my mind and bought a 2600. Read that fewer faster cores better for gaming, and for video processing more cores are better but only up to a point because then core speed slows so you get diminishing returns. It all sounded plausible. So I went with the 2600 off eBay for under 125 the other week when they had their 15pc off offer.

This or a Ryzen 5 2600 as they are now at the same price point.

Good offer, but a little off Scan's recent sub-145 deal: AMD Ryzen™ 7 1700 8 Core AM4 CPU/Processor with Wraith Spire 95W cooler, £144.98 at Scan P.S. & Amazon's 1700X deal: Ryzen 7 1700x - £141.59 on Amazon UK

Deepcool Castle 240 mm RGB AIO CPU Water Cooler £83.99 @ Scan
Found 3rd DecFound 3rd Dec
Deepcool AIO - heard it isn't bad for the price, also Deepcool have very customer service from what I have read and heard

I don’t think it that bad for an aio, but it is mostly for ascetics, most AIOs are exactly same just with different tubing, and some features which I am sure a lot of people won’t care for. I understand where you are coming from 100%, I have touch a AIO since the h100i I got i my original pc which was pre-owned. I mostly stay away because they cannot be cleaned or serviced easily, and your loop ideally should be flushed and cleaned every 3-6.

No actually, HUKD did automatically on the other deal, I have no idea why I didn’t do it on this one.

Well, you made the effort to check the delivery charge for your other Scan deal though?

Or maybe, I didn't check the delivery. :| I didn't mean to offend you with my comment, but if you want to act like a child and witch hunt that is fine too.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED CPU Air Cooler, £21.95 at amazon
Found 29th NovFound 29th Nov
4 Heat Pipes Direct Contact Aluminium Fins 1 x 120mm PWM Fan with RED LEDs 120 x 84 x 160mm (4.7 x 3.0 x 6.3 inch)

The tower is fine but the fans are ridiculously loud and didn't do much of a good job cooling my Ryzen 2700 (@4ghz), I replaced the fans with just a single Corsair AF120 and not only was it far quieter, it cooled better aswell... Either I have faulty Coolermaster fans or they are that terrible.

ooo I like the r6 185mm clearance for cpu coolers, nice. but don't forget RAM, when you get to the behemoth sized coolers you sometimes find they have low motherboard clearance and it can cause issues with motherboards where ram is too close or with ram that's too tall. but honestly if you get the 212 you probably will be in the same boat as me, the cooling on a 212 is so good it makes it hard to justify anything bigger and if you load 140mm fans front, bottom, and rear in the case the cooling will be epic (top if you want but keep the pressure positive in the case and low rev the top and rear, or you will get dust).

I see, Thanks for the info. hmm...yeah....the Noctua will definitely cut into my budget I'm afraid. :( Guess I could consider it when upgrading. I have the Fractal Design Define R6. Its got sound dampening. So I hope that might be enough to reduce noise from the fans. Also, I'm sure it will fit if I ever plan on buying a Noctua. The case is huge!

Also have my 212 EVO since 2014. Perfect quality and specs

I'd go for the 212, but then I did. Had my hyper 212 evo (not this led version) for about 5 years now I think. although I did swap out the fans for Noctua so it was quieter. Running an i7 6700k at 4.2Ghz on 2k SC2 and other cpu heavy stuff and maxing out at 62c while still running very quiet (bout 40-50% fan speed for Noctua). if I was buying now I'd probably just buy a full Noctua cooler but that would set you back at least £40 and I really like the one at £66 on ebuyer (I try not to shop there anymore) BEAST but you need space for it :)

Nice price. I'm waiting to see what Zen 2 offers up, hopefully around April time. That should be the real showstopper for Intel.

I just ordered that CPU, 123.25 delivered! I have an order with scan for a 1700 but they have no idea when it will be in stock (it's overdue), so I'm cancelling it. I've been reading that with some video processing software that more cores is not necessarily better (diminishing returns vs core speed). 6 should therefore be enough to suit my purposes, and replace my 8 year old phenom!

The CPU is still available at £145 before discount: but unfortunately the motherboard was just a single item listing so has now gone, but here is the link: My CPU has dispatched within a hour of buying with tracking too, so they don't mess around! Was over the moon when I found these as I was on the verge of giving up after a lot of fruitless searching yesterday. Good job this promo ran over two days or I would have been out of luck.

Link or it didn't happen :p But seriously if you've got a link I wouldn't mind checking those out I haven't found anything close to that and I've been looking (on and off) for the past few years

Managed to get a really good deal with a lot of shopping around, and probably a bit of pure luck (my best offer on the board was accepted almost instantly, think the seller wanted it sold desperately). Got a Gigabyte AB350-GAMING for £35 before discount via accepted best offer and got the Ryzen 2600 for £145 buy it now before discount, both brand new, paid £154.70 in total with discounts and P&P (y)

Damn fair enough that is a pretty good price for 32GB but as other people have said for Ryzen speed really is key. Like with power supplies though, sometimes it's best not to penny pinch on the motherboard, to save yourself a small fortune in the long term. (y)

Tbh there seems to be air coolers that compete well with all aio water coolers, though of course air coolers add their bulk over the cpu rather than elsewhere in the case with high end models potentially blocking ram slots. Naturally this particular cooler will be limited by being only 120mm however. Even though I'm using an aio water cooler in my current setup since it was included in a motherboard deal, I personally would prefer air cooling since depending on the cooler they can have comparable cooling, quieter operation and the only thing that ends up failing would be the fan as opposed to an additional pump and the concern of it containing liquid. Custom water cooling of course trumps both for those really dedicated and fine with the added risk.

had one, no better than a decent air cooler.

Bang For Buck its Solid, i switched a kraken x31 with this (the kraken was needed elsewhere) and the temps were less than 2 degree different on idle.

I am pretty good at overclocking, but it's not hard these days, used to be much more of a pain in the ass on old chipsets in like 2006 lol its made very simple these days, and unless you do something insanely dumb (you wouldn't) it's not going to damage anything. I love overclocking though, at one point was a weird obsession/hobby :D

Oh, that's a relief. I was under the impression I may start to be getting close to the limit if I were to overclock. I'm running a RTX2080 with an i7 9700k. I must be doing something wrong then, because everytime I've oc'ed it's resulted in either a Blue Screen or a failed boot so I end up leaving it - maybe I could grab some training off you :)

I agree

No you are right, I would choose a slightly higher wattage for my personal rig. But to be honest it would only be for future upgrade purposes and not necessarily for a ridiculous amount of overhead.

Explains why we are having this debate lol. If you're building to sell, then obviously you would put a PSU that is fine for that specific build. No one who is building their own PC would/should choose the PSU you stated for your build unless they plan never to change or upgrade anything.

I build them to sell, I work with computers for a living. I'm not just someone who builds for fun. I've done this for 15 years successfully. Have a couple of recent client builds that where in testing before shipping.

Do you build them to sell, or build them for yourself? As there's a big difference... Why get "just enough" to cater for that specific build if it's for yourself? PC parts and power consumption change consistently, and having a personal computer you will obviously be upgrading at some point. To which you will not want to keep buying a new PSU every time. I definitely agree that the brand and build quality is more important than the wattage, and I agree you have enough to run your current set up fine. It's pushing it based on the whole purpose of having a PC, which is the facility to upgrade rather than buy new. However again, it's all personal preference.
