Olympus m4/3 16mp - very fast focusing , touch screens, reasonable price, lots of lenses , compact size.
EOS can be slow focusing - kids don't pose well.
Fuji - as said already the lenses are expensive.

Prior to joining the four thirds groups i had and still have Nikon 300s and Canon 7D cameras, I have a acquired a range of lens for both cameras and i was relieved to know that these lens could be used with a mount adapter in manual mode. I am please that i can use my Nikon and canon lens on my panasonic Gh3, thereby saving money on buying new lens and the photos are good.

camerapricebuster shows it as cheapest on 3rd july but its not on their normal list now which shows calumet as 'cheapest'

Cheers! I did search before posting but that deal didn't show up for some reason.:(

Looks like this camera is not a winner but some decent specs worth considering.

Out of stock at Argos now so have expired deal. Good spec and camera for the money, don't be put off by comments above. Excellent selection of lenses available from Fuji and very nice cameras to use. Jpgs straight out of the camera are better than most.

Same sensor score on dxo as the 2009 gf1 - the newer olympus m4/3 sensors are far better.
I have e-pl1 and e-pm1 - which I don't use . . but I use old nex and e-pm2(new sensor) daily.
Newer processor though that lets it produce 16mp pictures as opposed to 12mp. Also better ISO performance for low light.

The A5000 performs better in low-light / high-iso. During the day their performance is virtually identical in my eyes. I'd probably choose the GF6 over the A5000 just because I prefer the lenses and the camera controls. Both are great.

I can't believe it did not even go over a 100... It is really hot in my opinion. One of the best compact camera out there.
Problem is the newer Sony A5000 is smaller, lighter and has better image quality and doesn't cost that much more.http://snapsort.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GF6--P-vs-Sony-Alpha-A5000

What's the difference between x-e1 and x-e2 anyway after 3.0
Firmware in x-e1?
Bigger screen, faster EVF, faster focus, +/-3ev exp compensation vs +/-2ev, seperate buttons for AF-L and AE-L. I think that's about it... It's all mostly little tweaks that all help rather than drastically change everything.

Bah! Good thing they will adjust the price if you already paid at the higher price - http://shop.fujifilm.co.uk/terms_and_conditions
This is even less since today

too big i think
Yeah possibly - I'm debating it at the moment... It's actually not all that much larger than the X-T1 - not quite as long, a few mm taller and a few mm wider because the VF protrudes out the back a bit. Lenses wise there's a little bit of a difference, but not quite as much as I at first expected (the 24-70mm f4 FE looks slightly smaller than the 16-55mm f2.8 which is nice). Can you tell that I might be trying to convince myself? I'm thinking either an A7 or give up on compacts and just go back to a big old DSLR...

Try dxo with a different browser. If you choose sony and hybrid type from options on right you can see how close they all are. Also I don't think that a score difference of maybe ~only 5 is noticable ??
As stated above, your posted model is the newest entrylevel nex replacement ( 2 yr g'tee at currys) . The sigma 30mm/2.8 is the e-mount bargain ~£125 but only f2.8 try and find sample images online. Sony 50mm/1.8 with 20 cashback is a bit long for indoors and the 35mm/1.8 at £300++ (ouch!) is no sharper than the sigma 30mm.
Nex 6 was top/latest model - these are very cheap here - http://www.wexphotographic.com/used-compact-system-cameras-sony/b3240-m230?sortby=1
I bought a used samsung nx1000 and nx30mm/f2 for less than half the price of the sony 35mm - but it's slow to focus in low light !!

Thanks, I will try the dxo site again.... But surely paying for a cheaper compact system camera and then a much more expensive which then brings the cost the same or more as a dslr beats the point??

brilly
remember dxomark shows the potential of the sensors but you aren't willing to pay for that potential so need to look at camera/lens pairings i guess
ofc if its the same type then its fine to compare directly

where do you want to take the pictures?

There's no specific purpose.. Mainly on special occasions such as holiday or festival times, although now and again I want to learn more complex and bokeh photography.. Hence I want a camera that can take high quality photos.

I actually never knew about the DXO website. It's great as it shows that quality-wise there isn't much difference between the a5000 csc and nikon.

DXO site for some reason won't allow me to compare several cameras at once, so I was just wondering what is the difference between these nex-xx models and the A5xx models? Which is the last model before the A series? Also I don't want to pay £200 for a lens, so what lens can I use to create that bokeh effect on the sony cameras?
frogbog

Fair enough. I was just mentioning a budget way of getting subject isolation/bokeh.
If you look on Dxo for their sensor ratings you can see how the sensors score and the old nex scores better than the 100d.
I have a nex f3 , dxo score 73, and don't notice a difference from old 5 !
I just got a d3200 -Argos 199 and have bought the nikon 35mm lens mentioned. I can get same results with nex 5 and an old 50/1.7 lens - all manual focus tho' .
The dslr is a lump! I prefer smaller, mirrorless cameras like the one in this deal - they are easier to take out and about and use more often.
nex 5 and an old manual pentax 50mm/1.7http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/zzzz56/media/DSC04216_zpsb21904ee.jpg.htmlhttp://s1379.photobucket.com/user/zzzz56/media/DSC04215_zps1ba8bf7a.jpg.htmlhttp://s1379.photobucket.com/user/zzzz56/media/DSC04217_zps40af380c.jpg.html

Thanks very much zzzz...Great shots, although these are taken with batteries, do you have any daytime/nightime shots of people? I couldn't agree more about the size...thats what is putting me off buying a dslr as I need a camera which I can easily carry. What's the modern equivelant of the nex f3? I want a camera with a few modern bells/whistles and a wide aperature lens, but doesn't cost the earth!
the one you posted really but i dont think its that much better than the F3 (my current) and some things are actually worse like the screen.
the next jump is to a5100 which santa will be providing me but that currently costs 400+ (was 300 in lightning deal recently)

The GX7 with 20mm lens seems to be the same price £779 on amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00EAL9ZHO/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1401718747&sr=1-1

But not sure if it will be processed in time?

Thanks for spotting this, it was OOS on amazon when I was looking yesterday!

It would be risky as to whether it will be processed today or not, not sure if Amazon work the same way as Wex in this regard (delayed production of receipt). I would suggest contacting them directly if possible.
GM1 looks fab but I really wanted the Electronic Viewfinder and tilting LCD, as I use both of these all of the time for the shooting I do.

It was between the GX7 and Olympus OM-D E-M10, which is a little more svelte (although the bulge on top adds to the height). I was keen on trying to keep the size of the lenses down (hence micro 4/3 not Sony NEX or Fuji), and when I compared reviews of the Pana 12-32mm pancake to the Oly 14-42mm pancake that comes with the EM10, the Panasonic came out on top - wider at the short end, better image quality, and a manual zoom instead of a power zoom (personal preference). I was keen when switching to CSC to get a kit I can carry almost everywhere - I've not had a chance to hold a GX7 yet, but it has to be an improvement on my 5 year old DSLR!

When I saw that most sites recommend the Pana 20mm F1.7 as an excellent buy, I couldn't resist the deal. I'm a little concerned that the GX7 will be too bulky , but with the saving I've made here I figured that in future might be able to sell/swap the body, acquire an E-M10 and keep the two lenses. Considering the cost of buying the two lenses individually, I've effectively got the body for about £220 so there's some lee-way there.

On the other hand I might decide that the video quality and 1/8000 shutter speed are worth keeping the GX7 for.

Anyway, thanks for your comment :)

Not going to vote negative, but the GX7 is a little too big and overpriced, imo.

Oh, and the 12-32mm is better suited to the tiny GM1.

My 400D broke. Would this use existing lenses? Does this also record video, can anyone comment on quality?

You need to buy the Eos/ef to M lens adaptor. I believe it still does auto focus with this adaptor.

I was interested In getting an Canon M, but was put off by how all the settings you want for shutter, app, and iso settings were hiding in menus making it slow on the go.

Went for a Samsung NX1000 at the time, was clearance for £200 (mid last year), still slow to get to certain settings.

Got bored of the NX1000, and got myself a 70d and never looked back.

I don't think you can compare a £1000 dslr that you need a bag for to a £200 CSC that you can fit in your jeans pocket (at least with pancake lens).

I know, and I completely agree. The NX1000 is a nice camera, I loved using it but changing settings was just a little slow. Even with the I - function button on the lens. Would've preferred extra buttons on the back dedicated for aperture and iso levels, with the wheel being shutter speed. Like a Canon 550d layout but in a csc body.

Quality and portability of the NX is amazing, but I didn't buy a pancake lens for mine. Lost interest in it fairly quickly since I'd miss a lot of shots due to slow tuning. But I do have a lens adaptor to use my Canon lens, and my 8 mm fish eye does well on it for a throw around camera, will begin using it more this year as my skateboarding camera. :)

good to hear some 1st hand feedback on this camera - after reading reviews of the free 17mm 2.8 pancake I decided to sell it on ebay (£110) and plan to get a better pancake in the near future - I've read some really good things about the Panasonic 20mm 1.8. Anyway haven't taken it out for a test drive yet but indoor shots in low-light look fantastic with the kit lens

I'm actually really happy with the 2.8 pancake - I even put it up for sale when i first received it (believing the same reviews you read), but took it off the market after trying it for a bit. Lovely results from it and I like the extra with you get over the lenses that are closer to the 50mm equiv. No good as a portrait lens but brill for unusual/striking DoF shots.
It's a relief

DSLR are the best for picture quality, all professional photographers use them.
All others are more or less the same. So if I want perfect pictures-using DSLR,otherwise my mobile phones camera does the job.
Advertised Sony NEX-5R not worth the money; for same money my choice would be Nikon D3200 without any doubts.

Mid to high end DSLRs will easily beat a good compact system camera, especially if you add expensive (leica etc) lenses. Saying all DSLRs will outdo the NEX5R and all non-DSLR cameras are poor in comparison, especially a lowly bottom rung one like the D3200 is plain wrong.

Professional photographers use professional DSLRs, you don't see them using £400-600 ones and in most cases a pro's camera cost will be dwarfed by the cost of their lenses. We've just bought a £2600 Leica lens for the camera that mates with our microscope in the labs and that was considered a cheap option.
You generally get what you pay for with cameras and lenses (to a point of diminishing returns), certainly so at the lower end of the scale with sub £1k cameras and lenses.

A mobile phone camera is not comparable with everything that isn't DSLR.

Only agree that lens for camera is most important.
So even entry camera like Nikon D3200 does job pretty well with good lens.
And this Sony NEX R5 is crap compared with even cheapest DSLR with standard lens.
Just make sure the case accommodates your most commonly used lens attached to the camera (I’m assuming 18-55mm for most people).

I got the official accessory pack which comes with the small shoulder bag – it can make you look a bit like a Japanese tourist! The accessory pack is something to definitely look out for. Some places were selling it on its own for £50-60 without having to buy the camera from them, comprising case, battery and better neck strap – worth buying it for the £79 battery alone. Hunt one out if they’re still available.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced adaptor for this, that will allow use of an old DSLR lens AND allow autofocus?
can you still get this?
I found this one used but with 2 lenses for £259 open to offers.so really value for money if interested, hope it will help someone

I have the same also using it with manual old lenses e.g. minolta md primes( for around £10 on ebay) with cheap adapter, produce decent images

I have the NEX 5N. Much as I like the images and videos that it creates, I don't think these cameras quite suit the target market at which they are aiming. The zoom lenses are simply too big, and the prime lenses are too expensive. The Sigma 30mm is the exception to that rule - cheap and a v.good performer...but it doesn't have optical image stabilisation! The new 16-50mm power zoom is a fairly good option as it reduces down to the same size as the 30mm. The actual image quality isn't particularly good though (the same as the 18-55 lens that comes with this camera).
Long and the short of it - make sure you really know what you are buying. This is a cumbersome camera that will require additional lenses to become truly portable. It will likely remain at home just as much as a DSLR.
As for recommendations? I bought a Sony HX20V super zoom - it is a fantastically versatile camera, takes exceptional video (the stabilisation blows my 5N out of the water) and also has an incredible/stable zoom. It you do some pixel peeping, you will see detail smearing. By and large though, it has become my go to camera for holidays etc. & for normal off the cuff photography, my Lumia 920 with the Amber update performs exceptionally well.
So yes, these NEX's are good cameras - but they certainly aren't portable. Also, the microphones are a real let down on the audio front in comparison to my Lumia 920 (the audio tracks are really flat, with no bass or dynamic range).

Don't get me wrong though - these cameras can take amazing photos with the stock 18-55 lens. Just don't be surprised when you miss a photo opportunity because the NEX has been left at home! (Sony need to work on their lens offering...cheaper, more compact - they'll then be on to a real winner)

Hi Zero,

I just don't agree. This camera was exactly what I was looking for. If you're a pretty serious photographer then I think you're likely right, at the end of the day you can't beat a good full sized SLR with a top lens, but if like me, you enjoy photography, want something that can produce SLR IQ but do not want a bulky SLR then this is an absolutely awesome camera. I had two cameras before, a Sony Alpha with a 18-250mm lens and it's kit lens which sat at home too much because I just didn't want to carry it around (I travel back and forth Belfast a lot). I got bought a good Canon compact to solve the problem, but while it's photos were okay, it just wasn't an SLR...then I found this!

I will say, once you get the larger zoom lens then you lose some of the advantages of it's size (and it looks a bit silly) but it is still significantly smaller and lighter. I have the very small 16-50 lens which pretty much makes it a compact camera and is exactly what I need for travelling, you can get it in your jacket pocket! If you can find me another camera which takes photos as good as mine which will sit in my pocket please tell me, I will sell mine and buy it!

I do think you need to know your needs, you could be a serious photographer that just wants to travel light somewhere, hardcore hiking with some climbing for example, and this offers a great compromise, or, like me, you travel all the time and can't afford hold luggage just to get your SLR on the plane. A lack of a viewfinder really hasn't bothered me, and composing shots with its tillable screen is a lot of fun. It's not for everyone but there is very a much a market for this. I do agree with you on the lens front though, I wish there were a few more better ones on offer.

Samsung NX lenses;
http://www.dailycameranews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Samsung-NX-R-Full-Frame-mirrorless.jpg

Sony NEX lenses;
http://www.fotoradce.cz/soubory/clanky/964/vsony_nex_photokina_2010_lenses_2.jpg

Both systems have the same size sensor, yet the Samsung lineup is far more coherently thought out - and their lenses are comparatively much smaller. If you look at the primes in particular, the 16mm, 20mm and 30mm are all v.small indeed. From past research, I'm pretty sure the Samsung lenses also significantly outperform the vast majority of Sony's NEX lenses. (I say all that grudgingly, as I really dislike Samsung as a company!)

I do much prefer the hardware and overall technical ability of the NEX lineup...but Sony are just dismal in releasing competitively priced lenses. It is simply too costly to get a good setup - particularly one which includes OIS for video (the 16-50mm is a welcome addition).

heat added, but i really must resist.
Just got my 'welcome to nikon' prepaid visa card with the cashback on it today. So about 4weeks overall.
Great find, however i've had my eye on one of these for a while and the price does seem to be dropping. Lowest it's ever been but might be worth waiting til after xmas. Nevertheless, heat added
beginning of month tbh.

They had one of those in store promotion leaflets with it on, and listed on the website.
Point being, that 'usually' it will get repeated in the sales ?

Is there a proof?
why? why? why?
seriously he's made it all up just so people will go to comet, norwich!!!

Because there is no point of sharing a deal with thousands if there were only 6 items, the advertised link does not work etc.
Would you believe me if I say my local garage is selling brand new BMW's for 1/3 of price and put the link to BMW site? Would you believe me? The whole idea of sharing is to make people to use it where on this deal hardly ANYONE managed to get it.

The best lens for this system camera is the Nikon 1 Nikkor VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6.

Ummm, wot? oO

Doesn't that rather depend on what you want to take pictures of? The 10-30mm lens has an equivalent 35mm range of 27-82mm, i.e. wide angle to short telphoto/portrait. The 30-110mm lens has an equivalent range of 82-300mm, i.e short to long telephoto, so good for telephoto shots, but not much else!

PS. Good price for the V1 btw, heat added.

Well said emso. Telephoto is no good for portrait which is what most will do.

Classic portrait focal length is 85-135mm, some people prefer even longer, which is why the 70-200mm 2.8 type lenses are very popular for portraits on a full frame camera.

Just saying :p

Good price for a good camera anyway.

I think I did not make myself clear enough. I meant it's the 30-110mm lens that makes this Nikon 1 system "worth buying". It is so compact and fast-focusing, and is able to provide performance matching very high-quality lenses in other systems. The standard zoom 10-30mm is just so-so, when combined with the Nikon 1 body, the combination does not excel in any aspects when compared with its Micro 4/3 competitors. The Nikon 1 pancake lens 10mm/2.8 is just pointless.
Nikon have just announced the replacement for this camera, so expect to see a few deals appear for the old model.....

Actually, telephoto is best for portrait.

New version launched today and £100 cheaper
great camera, great price

Sbot2012: RX100 is double the price and slower. Albeit a great camera and slightly more compact with lens
Polythene: Canon mirrorless is much larger, especially lenses

so for a completely quiet shutter, fast focus, good DR and small size, this is a good buy
Seems like a good price for a relatively new camera system. Price drop before the new Canon mirrorless comes out perhaps???
Great deal, have some heat

This may sound daft but why would you buy this without a lens?

er..... if you already had a lens for it
oO
Would people go for the kits with 14-42mm or the ones with 14mm?
tauran
cold, a lens would cost around £200. deal mentioned a few posts above is much better,

The £249 kit deal (less £50 cashback) is ace.

But this is a great deal for others who might, say, already own a micro 4/3rds lens or specifcially want a Panasonic 20mm (the best micro 4/3rds lens) which isn't included in bundle deals now.
if you can get a lens at that price it would be hotter, is that a panasonic lens? the pana lens is supposed to be of very good quality, hence the £200 price.

Got mine today... I can't wait to gift it at Christmas!
Lucky you :) I don't know if there is a Jessops in Belfast....
Jessops is pretty good. You can even collect in store, which means not having to worry about missing your delivery or other problems with deliveries. Convenient for me, as I live 1 minute from my local Jessops. :p
Yeah, I think the G2 gets £40-50 cashback, and I know Jessops have it for the same price, however I was more inclined to order through Amazon because I've never used Jessops before.

Edited By: iamsimonwhite on Nov 28, 2011 00:06: Changed $ to £
I just bought this from Argos (same prices BTW)... wasnt sure as they have the new GF3 for only 379 ... i think you only get back 45 pounds cashback ... i really like it though and will be keeping it .. i find it better than my tz20 (obviously) and also the Olympus EP-1.
Any thoughts ?
