I wonder if their system had a glitch this morning? As they are showing as out of stock now in all my local stores too and online delivery has vanished too. I did not dream this I swear!!!

I spoke to my local RS again who said their warehouse now has stock. They hope to have stock again by the weekend. So maybe other retailers will have more stock soon too? Unfortunately RS website now shows £84. Gutted!! :(

Just picked one up for £59.99 in John Lewis. Saves trying to find one in stock and with 2 year warranty. Hot deal though if anyone can get it!
Many thanks to OP for his input - After 'losing' my purchase from my basket due to being out of stock yesterday I checked page at 6.25 this morning and saw that one was available from Amazon at £54.99 ( I had a £10 off £50 spend so managed to secure this for £44.99) - so worth keep checking the site

Save your money and look for a second hand set of floorstanders or larger bookshelves that are designed to work with the Teac

thanks.
It's definitely a good price but only has two rca plugs for the sound, doubt you will get 5.1 surround sound from that...You'll only get it from playing dvd's.

What are the speakers like? Good fro cheap and cheerful?

I've one of the Teacs from Richer Sounds, and haven't got around to buying any speakers yet- using my hifi ones, but it's a bit of a waste because music sounds terrible through the Teac.

doesnt even play HD! if you must buy cheap crap like this then get the micro 2+ by sumvision. Very basic but does the job albeit painfully

I don't find the Micro2+ a painful experience by any measure, what are you doing with it exactly!? It is basic yes, but competent & straight forward. Are you sure you are using it as directed and not using it for the other purpose!?

ljbutchik07, the 2+ remote is actually not bad. I think the previous versions had those awful credit-card, bubble button remotes. The 2+ has a proper rubber button remote.
I would go for the I-on vortex personally no problem with the remote compare with the sumvision

Mk1 sumvision micro is £17.99, which the xenta are based on.

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_7&products_id=109395
These little devices are great but personally I would pay the extra for one that plays MKVs at least, WMV's & MOV's preferable too.

The Cyclone 2 (or 2+, which adds coaxial surround support) covers a lot more bases than this product for a little more cost. Saying that, I picked a clone (the dubiously titled "Turnmeon2") for £19 on one of those deal-of-the-day sites.

Can't see why you'd buy a SilverCrest from Lidl when you can buy a proper brand name player (eg a Philips http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9368523.htm) for the same money.

Hmm, perhaps because the cheap branded ones are the same guts as the cheapest of the supermarket brands, with various features disabled, and with two years less warranty?

What features are disabled?

Depends on the models in question, but typically things like playback of photos/MP3s, playback from DVD+R and/or DVD-R, playback of video files from the memory card and so on. Essentially, anything that might possibly be as a result of the user infringing copyright, it seems.
It also has a 4 in 1 memory card reader.....

My PS3 can't play PS2 games so it could be good for that and I see your point too.
Sony couldn't even get this to be a good deal, don't take it personally.

I agree, this is poor. Maybe if it was £100 then I'd get it :3
I wouldn't be bothered because PS3 has iPlayer. I just wanted it because of the PS2 since I have so many games which I miss playing but no console, then again I can just get one for a bargain on eBay or something since there so cheap these days.

Nah tried that aswell. I should dig out the original remote.
joey_t
I have this, paid about 60 quid for it. Its well worth it for 30 quid.

Mostly use it for DIVX, but can't say I've ever noticed it being upscaled on a DVD.
I use the samsung remote from my TV to control it, the original remote is pretty small. The only annoying thing about using the TV remote is you lose functions, ie: I can't fast forward, the FF button only skips scenes, so I have to manually select the time to move it along.

Good though. Hot from me.

Perhaps you need to hold down the skip button for FFWD? At leas this is how it is on my remote.
Out of stock now- lucky i got my mine yesterday!

As above these will get even cheaper when the Freeview HD boxes are for sale.
Better off waiting for one of them as the toppys will plummet in price.
I LOVE this, when it works. It has less inbuilt memory than the 5800 so adding 3rd party things like MyStuff (which is brilliant) makes it go crashy after a while.

I have the intermittent problem of it being in a continuous reboot loop trying to do updates and having to reinstall MyStuff. It happens every month or so and makes me tear my hair out. Sometimes I wish I'd went for a Humax.
Fantastic, I love my toppys!!!!
Does anyone know what the noise level of these is? Is there a fan and does the hard disc spin all the time (i.e for time shift) or only when recording?

Just found my answer. This will be too noisy for me.

What's it like compared to the sumvision one? I've had my sumvision player for a while now and I was going to get another for the spare room. But now I've seen this I'm in two minds

Not that dissimilar to the Sumvision. Key difference is it lacks the ability to play memory cards so you have to put them in a USB adaptor (I use the one I got at poundland for £1).
Maybe better read about this Company by a customer on "Worst Company Britain"
barneydog;6807269
It's region 0 (region free) out of the box

Oh yeah! Thanks!
Danosaur1;6805059
That is incorrect. Granted the difference is not that great, but you if you compare the two you will see a difference. Intro titles are always a big give away, jagged edges along the letters instead of smooth.
It's done with a technique called interpolation. There may be TV's out there that will interpolate, but not many.

The difference is negligible. A £300 or £2,000 HD tv will upscale much better than a £20 dvd player.
robovski;6805892
So, gotta ask, anyone unlock this thing to regionless? I've got DVDs from the US and it's the main reason I still need a stand-alone DVD player as the PS3 won't co-operate. It'd be nice to switch to HDMI so I can stop using scart.

Hmm, wouldn't use wireless either. Depends on the interface really, I'm still tempted by the Hisense but that appears to have a crap UI.
Other places list it cheaper, but they seem to be out of stock, or waiting for stock!

http://www.trustedreviews.com/home-cinema/review/2008/02/28/Linksys-DMA-2100-Media-Center-Extender/p1

They work on Vista, but I am under the impression that they work with Windows 7 too... I am a bit put off having to run the system hungry Media Center components though, (meaning leaving on a PC as a server) ultimately I would prefer to use a NAS, although since mine went bust, I haven't replaced it yet!
I wouldn't even bother using wireless, as I would use mains powerline ethernet, but I suppose it will work if you avoid HD files!
tek-monkey;6463187
Does this play DIVX from the PC? And does it need software running on the PC for it to work?

I'm trying to work that out as well. From my quick google searches it looks as if its a Windows Media Center extender and I think it needs a PC with MCE to to function fully although some people say it can play things off a NAS box. Maybe someone knows more about this device.

Where the hell is Eire? You English make me laugh, you are the only ones call it that.

Not in any way getting territorial here, but it 1938 your government didn't want to refer to the new "Irish Free State" as such so passed an ACT stating it would be referred to as Eire, even going as far as to drop the fada off the E so that it didn't look Irish. The ACT was abolished in 1981.

I'm always amazed when I see it still referred to it as Eire.

Hello all,

I found the answer to my question elsewhere.

Its very important that the ISO-file is burned slowly - then it works.

Use InfraRecorder and burn the file at the lowest possible speed.

Best regards,
When I make the cd and insert it in the DVD it says "Check disk" and nothing more happens - can you help with another way to hack the LG DVX 492H?

bigwheels;5814137
Heres info on hacking it.

LG DVX492H 3 user region code/hacks July 06, 2009 Post region code/hack comment
Region code hack posted by pigandsheep, June 19 2009:
I have just used the CD hack as advised on this site for the LG dvx350. works fine.

Region code hack posted by williva, July 01 2009:
The stock Tesco are selling are Region Free but not sold as such. Check the 'Setup' on your machine before burning a hack cd you might not need. Sounds obvious but I didnt, assumed I needed a hack and had a frustrating time that I could have avoided! Apologies if this no-hack message offends the rules.

Region code hack posted by Irregular Shed, July 06 2009:
Bought my DVX492H from Tesco - unfortunately it wasn't region-free out of the box like the previous correspondent found. However, as the other correspondent reported, the CD hack for a different model of DVD player works perfectly. I've mirrored it here:

http://www.box.net/shared/v07pyb4e9x

It's a tiny file; the hack is an 11 byte ASCII file two directory levels deep on a CD-ROM. Instructions are in a text file in the archive.

Sorry - but the reviewers who had upgraded from previous toppys and were complaining about build quality; and expecially the engineer who'd pulled one apart to find there was no secondary buffer (hence the programs/recordings dropping out when a second started) seemed to know what they were talking about; if they are correct then software /firmware updates won't make up for poorly designed, poorly built and noisy equipment.
On other review sites there were people posting reviews in may last year saying cruddy epg etc. "there will be a patch to fix this" and people still posting this year with the same complaints and hopeful attitude.
Topfields good-name and loyal following will carry them through this - and hopefully Bigpockets having them at bargain prices is an indicator of the old model being dumped ready for a proper replacement.

Thanks. This thread has convinced me that there's nothing to be gained by switching from Humax to Topfield.
quidditys_shore;5642953
most of the reviews are by people not knowing what they've got or what they are doing. its all down to firmware/software

out of the box its not great, but as others have said visit toppy.org.uk where you'll find loads of help on the best firmware to run and software programs that change it and make it do loads of extra things.

i'd compare it to the recent tesco acer deal that i got. it is a great machine but the linux that came with it is awful! so like the reviewers do you complin about it & do nothing? NO! you research it, change it & make it an amazing netbook!

True, but hopefully the World Cup will ensure there will be a few boxes available for those who can get HD.

csiman;5643925
might have a long wait depending on location:-

Viewers will have to wait until analogue TV is switched off in their area before they can see the HD channels.
The last regions to change to all-digital signals, in 2012, will be London, the north-east of England and Northern Ireland.

It will be a long wait for some, but apparently they're hoping to be able to broadcast the World Cup next year in HD even to some areas that aren't switched over yet - which if nothing else may help to encourage a few companies to get some boxes out.

typical non-refurb price = £89ish delivered as compared to £48ish delivered for the OP refurb model.

Half price for a damaged box... Seems fair :whistling:

Looks good on paper for the price so hopefully they won't be returned and unfixed. Heated!

how big a saving is this? seems a decent price?

typical non-refurb price = £89ish delivered as compared to £48ish delivered for the OP refurb model.

edit:
Play appear to have sold out of the non-refub £89 new models, but PlayTrade will offer you a refurb @ £48.24 from Electrical-Deals no less, yet the Electrical-Deals site is now showing zero stock.
seems Electrical Deals appears to prefer to sell its products via 3rd-party sites rather than its own.

;-) I bought one and it didn't read some disks so I returned it within a week and changed it for another that worked OK :) cannot find any hacks for it to play any other disks other than region 2 which can be a pain. cheers - Stuart.
Refurbished? Which means returns, etc - why? As they have lots for sale it does make you wonder what the problem is with them!

Mine arrived this morning (though the status never changed on the order site).

On certain channels it will not go to the 16:9 aspect ratio. I have made sure all menus say this setting and the tv is set at that setting. The TV I'm using this with has freeview itself, and if I switch to the same channel to view through the tv itself, the 16:9 ratio is there, but when I then switch to the same channel to be tuned through this recorder, it will only do the smaller aspect ratio that doesn't fill the whole screen. I had seen a review that noted this problem on Amazon, but as only one person ever mentioned it I supposed/hoped that it was just his machine or that perhaps he didn't have the menus set to the correct setting.

Oddly enough, on some channels (like ITV) it only does this for the main show, while the commericals are full-screen. It doesn't do this on all channels.

Has anyone else with a widescreen tv had this problem, and were you able to fix it? If I can't fix it, this is basically a useless hunk of junk player that will go back, as it's incredibly annoying to try and watch a program that isn't filling the screen out.
which is the same price delivered ......

The same seller is selling these on a popular auction site, and they have 10 available right now at the same price and postage, the auction number is 200334138420.

I'm hopeful they'll send the one I ordered over the weekend. I just checked and they are back in stock and apparently have 13 left, so they will probably pack and ship before long. This same model is sold by the same company through play.com for the same price, fyi, and you can use quidco for play.com.
Skibster;4986751
The item is now out of stock and it doesn't show online that they've pulled mine yet, so I'm hoping I actually get one. They had them several left when I ordered, but if they are disorganized or sold them to walk-in customers before they pulled orders that had already been made online, I'm out of luck.

Anyone get a despatch status yet?

Is this site wrong then?

 Hi all, not tried this yet but here is the hack for opening the region codes -
First open the disc tray with the remote, then press home.
You will see the DVD recorder screen
highlight disc tray
enter 0086000 using the numbers on the remote
'reg free' should then appear on the display
close tray using remote
you should now be region free
(found on another website but I cannot find it again to credit the person)

For those of us not familiar with upscaling, will there be any really visible difference if using this with a Samsung 4 series 37 / 40" (HD ready), or is it pretty marginal ? I have a Panasonic HD recorder that I normally use, and am wondering whether to get this as an extra just for the upscaling capability on bought DVDs ??
Have used Superfi before - no problems, good service. The item i bought was a 'return, graded product' so watch out for this although i did know this when i ordered.
Or spend a few quid more and get the next model - SD580 - for £49.99 delivered directly from Toshiba. http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/en/Generic-Pages/boxing-day-special-offer/ Enter BOXOFFICE3 as a code.

[although this was a 'Boxing Day' offer, I've tried it just now and it still works OK]

Better job IMHO as it also includes a USB socket for playing video files etc from a memory stick

Amazon price is nearer £60 for the 580 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-SD580EKTB-Player-1080p-Upscaling/dp/B00198H49W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230598087&sr=1-1

They replied to my email (their phone is not being answered and answerphone is full). They say that these Toshiba SD-580's are on back order with their suppliers. I cant be bothered to wait and have emailed them to cancel the order. I've ordered the Philips from Amazon and will use the handset hack to make it multiregion, no difference then to the Toshiba really.
I got the Sumvision delivered for my daughter today, works a treat via HDMI, tested various xvids from a Maxell 12gb micro drive and all is well, picture quality is excellent, well worth £32 :)

Thanks to the person who posted this I placed my order yesterday whilst it was showing 'In Stock'.

I then received Order Confirmation. Then today I received another email with no text, just an attachment of an unknown file type so it is not possible to open it.

Then logged onto superfi and checked order status. It says 'Awaiting Stock'. How annoying is that, it said In Stock, No email to tell me it is out of stock or apology.

Price matched one from Currys today,no problem. Paid £54.43.

Multi Region hack works fine. Playing my region 1 DVDs minutes after taking player out of box.

Tried a few DIVX disks, all played OK.

Picture Quality is excellent. In my opinion the upscaling of the XDE500 is better than my Toshiba HD-EP30 HD DVD Player.

Now the icing on the cake, I'm about to register with LOVEFILM.

Many Thanks to OP (great find)

I have tried and tried but cannot make mine multi-regional with this hack any suggestions to what I am doing wrong
Thanks
Okay I have a new question.

I've already used up my 4 rentals for this month. This evening I get an email from LOVEFILM saying they've dispatched my 5th and 6th DVD's. Huh?

Have any of you guys experienced this? Will they now charge for sending more DVD's than my free plan allowed for me to rent?
Got my code yesyerday, had to put wifes e-mail address as I had an account in the past. But same address.
Just had my code emailed too even though I've returned the DVD player! I just couldn't live with the noise of it so bought a Sony upscaler from Argos.

Voted Cold Philips Electrical Products are poor Very Poor

some people talk such **** on this forum, Ive had Philips products of all types for 20 odd years and have never had a single fault with any of them!

BTW this DVD player is fabulous for DIVX movies on usb stick:thumbsup:
sedj;2720190
No DTS decoder in this im afraid.

Had mine a week and it plays all the stuff my old DK player played and the usb port is the icing on the cake. For the price its a nice bit of kit and is very slim and not very deep, it looks rather cool tbh. People complained that the remote was tacky, but i find it has all the button you will need with a few featu[res that are not explained in the manual.

One of these being the lack of tray opening via the remote, this can be achieved by holding down the stop button. Also there were complaints of the fastforward and rewind sharing the chapter skip button, if you use the left and right arrow keys there is no need to use the dual function button.

Show me anything compareable at this price point and ill show my ****, tis a good buy ;-)

uh..errrrm - thanks for this - rep

I bought one of these last week at Currys for £39.99. However, it will not play avi files that I have created using Sony Vegas. These are pretty high quality - 1536 kbps, or nearly 1GB for a 4 min file. The user manual says that high quality audio files may not play properly. Has anyone had problems like mine?
lol it wont play those!!

it will play ones that are like 700mb for 60 mins. No hd avi!

Thanks for giving me credit on this!... Not!
There appears to be two versions of the DVP5980, the older 5980 and a newer 5980S, the different machines having different chipsets. The only way to tell the difference is to open the tray and press 55 on the remote, and it displays the info. According to information I have read, the newer 5980S plays WMV video files (which mine does), but the 5980 does not.

Also there are some alternative firmwares floating around that increase the number of characters displayed when you are browsing either a USB drive or a DVD with DIVX etc files, provided you have a 5980S. If you have a 5980, then the alternative firmwares that give more characters disable the HDMI (and there seems to be a question about whether this is permanent, even if you re-install the original Philips software).

If you want to check the firmware version, press 1379 when in the 'general' tab of the setup menu. The latest original Philips versions are 12.07.31.33 for the 5980 and 12.07.55.37 for the 5980S.

I assume that DSG are just selling the newer version, but thought that the above might be useful, just in case someone got an old one from the back of the store room.
Been sharking for a USB player for a while. Ordered, many thanks OP.

seems a decent price, shame theres no usb port. Maybe worth paying abit extra and going for a Philips.

http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~PHI-DVP5960~dept~dvd~subdept~DVDPLAYERS~brand~philips.htm#_
Although I posted this, I was hoping someone out there was going to post some comments about it, so I could be sure before buying it myself.

It seems like a very good price for the spec. I have had very good experience with Grundig items in the past. It's just I've never used any of their dvd players before, or purchased or used any upscaling dvd player.

Would this tick the relevant boxes if someone was looking for better picture quality from dvds on an HD TV?

Or would people recommend spending a bit extra for a brand when purchasing an upscaling dvd player?
Anyone know much about this dvd player, would it be good with my new LG32LB75?
