NEW QUEEN ELIZABETH II £5.00 COIN - £5 @ Westminster Collection

You try paying for something which is £10 with 20 pence pieces, tried once and they wouldn't accept it

I believe the law says you can use up to the amounts specified to settle a debt, so if I owe you £10 I can offer to pay you 50x 20p pieces and if you refuse I can legally say the debt is nullified as you have refused payment.

On the other hand if you offer to tender (purchase) an item then the seller is completely at liberty to refuse to sell to you for any reason including because they don't like low denomination coins.

Bit presumptuous...
Read a piece yesterday about the UK's so-called constitution. The author astutely pointed out that old Liz had effectively abdicated her responsibilities by allowing EU courts to have supremacy over our own.
Still, it was good to see her actually earning all those millions by doing her duty as head of state and preventing Bliar from taking us into an illegal war in Iraq.
Oh wait.

That's an interesting point. Then I could go into my bank and say that I want to pay off my mortgage, all I Queen Elizabeth I l 80th birthday £5 coins - they refuse to accept and bish bosh my debt us paid off?
No, because despite having Liz' Windsor's mug on them they're not legal tender in the UK.
Otherwise:
"And fans of wacky ways to protest can take heart from one thing: £1 and £2 coins are legal tender up to any amount you like. Even if they're frozen in ice or put in a bathtub full of honey.
What coins can you pay with:
1p - for any amount not exceeding 20p
2p - for any amount not exceeding 20p
5p - for any amount not exceeding £5
10p - for any amount not exceeding £5
20p - for any amount not exceeding £10
50p - for any amount not exceeding £10
£1 - for any amount
£2 - for any amount
"Source.
You try paying for something which is £10 with 20 pence pieces, tried once and they wouldn't accept it, they basilcly turned down my money. They thought I was taking the Mick, well I wasn't I had just saved them up. At the end of the day is up to whatever business do accept or decline what they want, as if it's to much hassle why bother? Like these coins, all the different ones, must be a pain knowing what is "legal tender" and fakes.

As you get a quid back it's a deal, you can't contest that. But these kind of things are pure BS. It's not free because you're paying for it via the postage, the pseudo exclusivity thing where it's only one per household will make old people panic buy like it's something selling on qvc for £100,000 but has miraculously dropped to £12.99 for a limited time offer! As a product, it won't be worth anything as soon as it leaves the warehouse, it has no purpose and means nothing. For those who will say it's for charity, simply give that money to the charity directly.
Only one campaign medal per household remember. ...

Let's face it, an overpriced coin is a massive saving in comparison to the woman (and associated hangers on) featured upon it.

I paid £11 for the full game, but I must thank you for the heads up that this game even existed. Loads of 5 star reviews so I bought it a 6 months ago for a flight, but never got around to playing it - today stuck at home with a dodgy tummy not going too far from the toilet and I remember that game I bought and never played - absolutely fantastic! Beats Olympics coverage anyday!

Is that less than usual cost...no
is it a good deal...no

I'm assuming you are saying that it might be worth something one day...

Sorry but NOT a deal

Look at the name of the forum. It is not a "bargain" thread, it is a "deal" thread. "Deal" and "bargain" are two very different things. Voted hot.

I have changed...I meant deal...and how is this a deal...please explain.....if you are saying its a deal because it might be worth much more in the future....would you like to buy some of my magic beans
I'm not saying it will be worth much more but I posted it because it's a pretty rare item and collectors might be looking for one.
That's a rare coin, but won't buy for that price

Wow, why so cold..? oO
@Stanley

They are an investment because of the silver content. And yes, you have to wait for the price of silver to go up hence me saying it is a long term investment. Unfortunately if you buy silver coins you pay a premium as well as the VAT. Buying bars will have less of a premium added.

Collectable coins are collectable because of the actual coin itself, not the metal content. If you went by metal content the coin would worth nothing, but the rarity of it could make it worth a lot of money.
If they are not collectable how are they an investment?
The price of silver would need to treble to make it worthwhile
Ref: people stating the price of the silver content to the cost

What you have to realise is that you are paying a premium for the coin to be struck, and you are also paying VAT on top. Yep, the government charge VAT on purchases of silver, but do not charge it on gold.

They are not a collectable but a long term investment (approx 5-10 years+).
Not a bad deal if you only after a few. I was paying around £30 for these in 2012. However if your buying more then 10 coins I suggest coininvestdirect.com much cheaper..

just tried it with the 50p coins up to value of £5 and found it did the same for me so it's not just you, prob only works for the items which cost more individually (i.e. sets, etc)

Since Gordon Brown sold all the uk's gold reserves our pound is no longer backed up by reserves of gold...............and i believe the same goes for Scottish banknotes................"In God We Trust" others pay cash!
I think Antenna means that Westminster pay £1 to have these made (or less) then pay Jersey £5 if and when any is spent. Not sure how accurate that is though: if it's anything like Scottish bank notes the issuing back has to hold the same amount they print safely in the Bank of England.

I dislike companies who use a charitable cause to cash in. Your money would be best served giving direct, even a pound donation would be worth more to the legion than this.

How are they cashing in? You pay £5 for a coin with a face value of £5 that you can spend (in Jersey) and the The Royal British Legion get 17p

The fact it's a commemorative coin and not currency in circulation, means little will be spent cept the money you paid with will be. You buy these coins because of the poppy, If that value is less to the legion than it is to the company then they are cashing in.

Edited By: kabs on May 01, 2013 15:41
Just try spending these in a shop in Jersey. They will think you are having a laugh.

This offer has been an absolute shambles!!
Royal Mint should be ashamed of themselves. I've never seen an online retailer self-destruct in the face of a special offer as badly as RM did here.
A short summary:
The website was brain-achingly slow to transact/amend basket at time of order.
Quidco was promised, then withdrawn.
Random amounts of money were taken, but no order summaries were available, or given with the dispatch.
There's only been one update, saying that instead of giving the coins in their presentation packs, they'd be sent loose. Although the sale price = their legal tender value, this is still very disappointing.
Two months on, some orders have been fulfilled, some haven't, with no flow of information, so customers are just left completely in the dark until the day in the distant future a padded envelope drops on their doormat (or not).

I'd normally complain till the cows come home, but it's futile as what they've sent me is technically worth exactly what I paid for, and what they haven't sent me hasn't been charged for, so complaining will do nothing but prompt a generic 'sorry' response at best. I wonder if, knowing that, they have become complacent with their handling of this debacle.
I still can't believe they'd have such a poor grasp of stock control and management that they let it descend into such a farce. These people should be banned from minting money as they're clearly too incompetent to deal with such an important responsibility.
Well to say all orders would be received by the end of June I have received nothing yet.....they have 3days left.....

I would vote this cold if it was for an adult, simply because if you are interested in this as a hobby then this will surely put you off it. Saying that it may be useful on the beach but only on the dry sand. Basically with any detector you will find any decent size object 1-2 iches below sand. The difference of a good detector is that it will find small items of jewellery and small coins easily down to 6-8 inches.

If it was for a kid, then take them to a beach, throw some copper coins in the sand and let them go play, then tell them any £1 get returned to you. Make the wee sods work for you.

A good starter detector for anyone seriously interested would be Garrett Ace 150.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/standard-discriminating-metal-detector-45964

Would buy the one above before taking a chance on the Argos one. Argos one has no arm grip, think it would get tiring using it over a prolonged period.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for, decent detectors start at £600 my detector was £1250 unless its for children dont waste your £s

As a totally serious question or two. Is your investment of £1250 going to pay for itself with "finds" and what sorts of things do you use it to look for? TIA as I'm just totally curious. :)

I'm curious of the whole 'Metal Detecting' thing too cibarious but I assume 'paying for itself' isn't something that would need to be considered if it's a 'hobby/pastime'. If you enjoy something I suppose the cost is irrelevant (assuming you have the funds to feed your hobby).

Why cold? From a financial point of view, this should be worth a fair bit in a few years to come. It is an official coin.

Hmmmm....I have a mint 1977 Silver Jubilee coin, which had a face value of 25p back then and was sold for about 50p. I think it's worth £1.50 now. I suppose if you buy enough of them and wait 30 years you could triple your money...not exactly a great invest though, is it.
