Of course you don't have to use a mouse, if you did you'd have a considerably better experience, otherwise it's not suitable for you. Certain app developers cater for your needs, but they don't need to, it's widely accepted that you should use a mouse to roughly emulate screen touches. Again, it depends on your own needs, they each have their advantages, but none superior over the other in general.

I use mouse and keyboard for both. I barely touch the shield at the moment because the sunvell does everything I need just as well from a user perspective and has the full play store. Some apps I sideloaded on the shield are completely incompatible which is an issue for me. Remember, android is optimised to run on micro tech in super thin phones, these boxes have room to use larger, cheaper, but just as capable hardware, and don't need to fit a screen nor a battery. They work very very well. You say you use a remote, which is the problem, and if it isn't possible for you to use a different input device then android TV is the best choice for YOU, its superior to you but not in general.

Noticed it claims only HDMI 1.4B.

What is the difference between HDMI 1.4 and 2.0?
HDMI 2.0 vs 1.4: 4K video at 50p and 60p. HDMI 1.4 introduced the kind of bandwidth required to deliver 4K video, but HDMI 2.0 can dole out 4K video without compromise, at 50 and 60 frames per second. In HDMI 1.4, the rate of 4K was limited to 24 frames per second.

Not sure if it's any significance to anyone that have HDMI 2.0 displays.
I've been looking at this Win 10 box, slightly cheaper and stock from Germany,so should be quickish delivery, and of course no import taxes unlike the risk from China/HK

Notable that the Intel N3450 is a quad core chip

Are there any different ( specifically better) choices out of interest ?
All I could see was Minix unit but over £100 more expensive and not a lot in improvement in spec I could see, would be interesting to compare other options.....
I think the cheaper Z8350 is also quad ?,but runs at 1.83Mhz whilst the first link is reportedly faster at 2.5Mhz ( might be 2.2Mhz not sure if this is a misprint)

Some of the review suggest slowness on the cheaper units to be unusable ( but didn't explain what they were using for)
so I was just factoring in an extra £40 or so isn't that great over the long term ownership of the device, although I may only use it mainly for some streaming or entertainment apps like iplayer, netflix, etc.

Got a firestick but for downstairs want something with a bit more "poke" as its pretty slugish, its ok for the wife upstairs.
Looking for ideas for a Plex server. Got a Nvidia shield which has two spare USB slots. Got a 7 year old proliant server or my main PC which is on most days tbh. So either use my main PC and attach more drives. Attempt to use the proliant server or buy something else. I have two spare sata hard drive to use. One is 2tb one is 1tb. Would be playing 90% of the stuff on the Nvidia shield. All 4k. But I would get 1080p stuff for other devices running Windows. Guessing that rules out the proliant as the files would have to be changed to run on Windows? Transcoding I think?

I have the 2GB/16GB version of this Beelink.

Everything is working great but I was intending to use it for emulation for older arcade games.

I've tried Mame4Droid (both versions - red and blue) and Mame4All. With any of those, the games will not launch at all even although they are listed - tried Happy Chick, games launch fine...

Anybody else on here doing emulation on their Beelink by any chance?

These S912 boxes have not had very good reviews , there seems to be many bugs to iron out ( and no Librelec for these either ). Hopefully custom roms should help improve matters - but the custom firmware linked to still has many bugs to fix.
At the moment the cheaper S905x boxes are better.

It should be expected that you will pay a little extra for added memory and storage as well as the faster DDR4.

It is not automatically the case that any custom firmware will work on any other box based upon the SOC because that would also be the case with manufacturers stock firmwares which is not the case because there is more involved than just the SOC and when support for other hardware elements are built into the kernel then it makes is even less likely that they will work of other boxes to attain the full functionality.

Freaktab member envagyok says on December 2015, here - freaktab.com/for…147 -
"Very-very fast, faster with android than mxq with openelec.
Also faster than mxIII-G. CEC working, the latest Rom 12-04-2015.
Plays everything except dolby hd with installed kodi.
H.264 uhd, h.265 uhd 10 bit too with good playback quality.

Original installed kodi jarvis beta, without pvr plugins.
I uninstall and install latest beta jarvis from kodi.tv, already pvr working.
Rom seems rooted with root checker, but I try to make framerate change within kodi with init d edit (chmod 666) and kodi autoframerate plugin. Sadly with universal init.d I cannot make writable the hdmimode file
This need further investigation."

Though this member seems to be using OpenELEC, not sure if that makes a difference. ...and I just realised Freaktab uses the US calendar - woops!

Does anyone still have this unit that they don't use and no-longer want the remote? My kids have done the worst thing possible and lost the remote!!!
Two things here. You can power this via usb if you have the correct cable, so that would discount the PSU being broken (albeit the USB cable I have doesn't provide 2A as per the PSU, I run it no probs with no USB devices).

Secondly, if the remote is broken, you can soft boot the unit with a little-known reset button on the bottom of the unit. That said if you know you have power and it doesn't boot on power-up, that's not much use.

So, what Kelhaggagi said. And make sure your TV is on the right channel! **NB This unit DOES have an LED on it - just not very bright** When the unit is in operation there's a faint blue LED on the left hand side of the front panel.
Jasee, it could be either the box or the remote. As far as I know the remote that comes with it is the only way to turn it on. Replace the batteries and get close to the box. If you also plug in a USB stick into the box that has a light on it you will be able to see if the box is actually powering up and just not outputting. As they are quiet boxes that don't have lights on them it is hard to tell if they are powering up or not.

That's great and very nice of you to risk it. I myself have tried abdul's TWRPs on a few a couple of boxes in the last year or so. They seemed to work, however there were problems, main thing being doing a Nandroid of the whole image and then flashing that Nandroid back to check. Until he made specific versions, then they are the best TWRPs going for amlogic boxes.

Even then in one case he had to iron out further problems. However I do not recommend flashing a nandroid to check, it might brick yours. Best is to ask him to make one for iii and even then needs first time tester. However these amlogic boxes which are not skimmed clones of clones, are easy to unbrick in my experience. If you do flash a nandroid backup image, everything sys+data, and it works, let us and him know so he can fine-tune it further.

Thanks again.

yes the price is so random. sometimes adding a discount code actually increases the price. Be careful as I
think that is coming from China. M18 is only in stock there. The only tv boxes available in euro warehouse
are from here. Most boxes are snapped up quickly and
even the deal I posted is gone. Just hope they sort my order as it was in stock when I ordered.

Pay with paypal as you will get your money.

On the website for the M18 they state 15-25 days (EU warehouse stock), it comes down to 7-15 days when you pay 16p priority shipping. The box was coming up at £46.69, I applied a code I found (VLTGB) that supposedly takes 8% off, but the price went up a little. I just copied the files directly from the PC via DLNA to my harddrive. … I just copied the files directly from the PC via DLNA to my harddrive. Thus negating uplugging it .

I want to be able to move my hard drives around between TVs without the clart-on that WDTV puts me through. The Android TV always accepts the hard drive, the other TVs (via WDTV box) don't without a lot of fuss.

Even leaving the HDD plugged in and going via Wifi or LAN (network plugs), data transfer takes an eternity compared to USB3 connection direct to the computer.
