Yes, CSSC members can visit all English heritage sites free of charge with the family. We have gone to Stonehenge twice now this year no questions asked just show your membership card. This is just one of the benefits of membership, a free taste card, cheap cinema tickets and various organised trips at amazing prices are the main reasons I joined (I sound like one of their salesmen perhaps I should be on commission!)

But is that for all English Heritage sites?

Some people will want to support the NT and the good work they do through … Some people will want to support the NT and the good work they do through paying membership fees. Others will say they can't afford to go on the UK price but the Scottish/New Zealand etc reciprocal deal means they can afford to go. Others will justify abusing the reciprocal rites as that they spend money at the tea shop and gift shop which goes into the charity coffers. I'm sure people can decide what's right for them. I personally think supporting the National Trust in whatever country you're mainly visiting properties in is the best way forward, but I'm lucky enough to have a lifetime membership.

That's all very well, but ignores the fact that charities are meant to be set-up for a charitable purpose, but how does that work with the National Trust CEO receiving over £200K? Seems self-serving to me, and it bugs me that every NT magazine is asking for donations all the time. The National Trust would collapse without all the volunteers who run it, and the salaries of its board members sticks in my craw, so being able to reduce the membership fee by getting a Scottish, New Zealand or Gambian one, is all okay as far as I'm concerned.

CSSC membership is £45.60 a year, which gets you 2 adults and up to 4 kids into Cadw and English Heritage sites. English Heritage is £92.50 for 2 adults (plus kids free). Cold because it's not supporting the propertys

Maybe if you work for NT and EH then you get a free membership anyway and might be annoyed at others not supporting the charities. However, many people in the UK who do not work for our heritage charities cannot afford the membership prices. If we want to encourage generations to learn about history and its importance, maybe we ought to have one membership like NZ heritage that gets you into both! Paying for NT and EH separately is a formula for putting people off and they will find other ways to see them. NT and EH I am sure get plenty, and those who have NZ memberships are still going in and buying plants, coffees and generally supporting the charities than by not going at all. I still have a student loan to pay from 2006 and after spending a long time getting a job (in London as there are more job opportunities in this location) I now pay rip off rents (obviously aiming to move away once I get some years in). So its nice to be able to visit historical houses and gardens on weekends for enjoyment... and now I can actually enjoy it fully without paying huge prices (so yes, I would rather support New Zealand! Why can't the UK do something similar!! Its all greed!).
