Its nice to have your recordings in the same location as plex, and most of the time it worked ok - but it was really annoying when it didn't. The main reason I sold my hdhr is because I really don't watch much live tv, the only real benefit to recording stuff was for shows like MOTD which aren't immediately on iplayer. It was pretty cool to get live tv on any device on my network, but again, as I didn't watch a great deal it didnt matter. I recently bought a new TV which could record straight to a hdd and it fills the gap sufficiently for me.

That was my thinking. Our Samsung can record to usb so I don't see the point in accessing live TV through an app on the TV. Only have two TVs in the house so the benefit is limited

More powerful and expensive nas can't do as many streams. I can only assume this went cold due to a lack of understanding as to this devices value.

Exactly i know enough out plex and so on and the fact this can transcode 4 at a time at 1080p is pretty impressive for the form factor / cost. I was looking at a Ts150 however the cost of an xeon upgrade drags the price up pretty high granted I would be able to run some vms off it also

I could do with something online if anyone knows of a decent rental. after a managed account with a few streams.
Hmm. On the fence with this one. A bit pricey for what you get tbh.only 2 bays too. Still rather a have a HP microserver at half the price which is upgradable in terms of cpu, gpu, ram and more HDD slots etc..

Update - I assumed it would expire yesterday but it still works.
I thought the biggest benefit was being able to use Plex apps on consoles to login and access your media server. Either way its a tempting price but I've managed OK using the web portal on my media PC (which is also the server) and iPad logs in for free so I don't think I need it. Great app though and hopefully the post brings more general awareness to a kickass program for all those with downloaded movies and TV.

Plex lifetime ace. On Nvidia shield perfect as a server works so well

I've never heard of plex... is it like now Tv?

Yes and no. They both stream media to compatible devices (Android, Windows, Roku, NVidia Shield, PlayStation, some smart TVs and anything with a web browser). The main difference is that Plex relies on you having your own content whereas Now TV is a subscription-based service for content that's not yours.

There are two elements to Plex - a server and a client. Either you or a friend needs to set up a server and then you set the server up to serve your own content (music, TV shows, movies, photos). You can then connect to the server through a Plex client and stream that content. You can do this on the same network (if the server is in your own home) or remotely (connect to your own server from a a remote location, e.g. hotel, or connect to a friend's server). It's basically more like KODI than NowTV, Netflix, Amazon, etc.

It does support plug-ins that stream various content for free, but it's nothing like the content you get from a subscription service (although there are a handful of 'illegal' add-ons where you can stream movies and TV shows).

Due to the requirement of needing a server that is capable of streaming media, it's not for everyone.

So I say "this folder contains movies" and it scans the files within. It doesn't work 100% (I had a 2 minute train.mp4 file which it detected as the movie Train, that's 1 hour 34 minutes) but it works 95% of the time so is worth having over not having. It maintains its own database so the only thing you might have to do is rename some music files if they're not picked up correctly.

Hooked up with a Roku 3, Plex turns your tv into a smart tv with a responsive and intuitive interface. That's what I use it for mostly and I love it. I also access my music library via the Android Plex app and cast to the Google Chromecast Audio devices around the house. it does everything I want from a media center solution, apart from gapless mp3 audio. My wife is able to use it too, which is a bonus. I can see myself using it for some time. Might be time for me to get that lifetime pass.

Does the DVR work with UK channels?

Yes if u have a hdhomerun
Does the DVR work with UK channels?
With a PlexPass your servers will also remember what you've watched - so your 'On Deck' is updated automatically with new shows in the series (assuming you've figured out how to add the shows to your plex server).

It also lets me add individual accounts for the wife and kids so they get their own viewing history.

Personally, I love Plex - simplifies everything in the house since the Samsung & Sony TVs all have Plex apps - it is as simple to use as Netflix or Amazon Prime. Consider it your Netflix for local content.

Bought the lifetime plexpass a few years ago (when they threatened to remove the lifetime option) - more fear of regretting it later - but given the use it has provided - it was worth it.

I was an XBMC/Kodi user for many many years but sadly too much focus now is on the web streaming and plug in side. Plex now has support for many different devices, the media server allows you to easily create multi user folders with automatic bookmarking for resuming playback across devices. My kids love the way they can start a movie on one device stop playback and then pickup from where they left off on any other device in the house (smart TV/Tablet/Now TV box/chromecast).Yes it means having a NAS or PC on running the media server element but many people have this now anyway. Not knocking Kodi...it has it's place, but so does Plex :-)

The picking up of playback would actually prove handy, shame Kodi doesn't have this but apart from that some valid points as to why you'd want to switch. I have a DS215j with the Plex server sitting in the addons but from what I hear, playback isn't that great so have refrained from installing it. My main setup is via a Raspberry Pi 2 and my NAS for storage which generally works well.

I may look into getting a low powered server for Plex to see how it compares.

well, i've been running mine for a couple of days with a single drive and i'm really reaaaally impressed with it - it is an awesome bit of kit. im only using the stock i3 + 4gb ram but was easily able to spin up a single core 2gb ram / 40gb windows7 VM and have it running along side the NAS transcoding a 1080p file. i think if you wanted 3 VMs running at the same time + transcoding / other intensive stuff you would need to upgrade... the numbers just don't work otherwise (unless they're light linux boxes?).

i must admit im not really up on chips, but you can assign up to 4 cores to the VMs so they're could be scope but im afraid im not familiar with the power of mac mini so it's hard to compare. what type of machines are the 3 VMs?

for moving data though this thing is great, especially through a VM... it uses some sort of magical gubbins to avoid using the network like a normal machine would, so it feels much more like working on headless server.

plex works like a charm, suddenly all my files just work! if you can go 'direct' then that's good but if the format is strange you can force the transcode. the cpu does work a lot when transcoding intensive files but there's no onboard GPU so i guess that's to be expected... it spikes to 95%, then drops back to 2% every few minutes or so repeatedly as it's playing the file but i've not noticed any problem when working on either the VM or the NAS at the same time.

if upgrading be weary of the warranty though, i think you're clear to upgrade the ram to 16gb but doing the CPU will likely void it.

well mine has arrived... unfortunately they only sent a single 4tb drive! so i'll have to wait for the other one to arrive before having a go with it, i'll let you know how the i3 copes with VMs...

You can run Plex on many NAS devices as well..

serviio, allcast, localcast , bubbleupnp... the list goes on

None of those have anything like the functionality of Plex. They are just DLNA clients.
Plex has full library and media aggregator functionality at the backend, plugins for streaming channels, resuming of playback from any device you have the client running on connected to your Plex server, and transcoding.
Just got the Smart TV one working. Looks all there and not restricted so same should be for this one.

It does actually have IAPs, but it's just for a plexpass subscription. … It does actually have IAPs, but it's just for a plexpass subscription. You don't need it it use the app. I'm using it just fine without.

Apologies, I meant forced IAPs.

finally plexis freeacross allolatformz enjoy
this app has always been free. the paid version is still not free thefeore not a freebie
CyDoNiA: Works fine on a Panasonic smart TV but I'm using Serviio now which is far better.
Still seems that you need to pay out or have a Plex Pass to use this properly according to the Google Play page:

• LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked.
Says the app is free on Smart TVs too but every time I try it on my Sony it asks for a PIN.
do i need to pay if i want to access my media remotely through this app?

If Amazon are your main content provider (instant video) then you'll need a Fire device. Personally I think the Roku is superior because it is less restricted by licencing and has no ulterior motives for restricting content. Amazon, on the other hand, don't play well with other children and should be made to spend some time on the naughty step whilst thinking about their behaviour.

A lot of devices support H.265 decoding right now. If it doesn't today, a firmware update won't add it, unless the hardware supports it already.
